When I was 15 years old, do $50 micro braids in my parents kitchen, I never could have imagined where that small beginning would lead.

I couldn’t have seen myself becoming a Master Cosmetologist. A Licensed Cosmetology Instructor. An educator. An author. A product developer. A business owner.

I couldn’t have imagined having opportunities to style celebrities, politicians, and thousands of everyday people who simply wanted to understand and embrace their natural hair.

I couldn’t have imagined creating a hair care brand that would go on to help so many people find confidence in their natural texture and give them permission to wear their hair freely.

But every part of that journey started with a single braid, a single client, a single opportunity, and a willingness to keep showing up.

So if you’re in a season where your dream feels small, where your audience is small, where your resources are limited, or where you’re wondering if what you’re building matters, don’t despise small beginnings.

The things God places in our hands often start as seeds before they become trees.

Stay faithful.
Stay consistent.
Keep learning.
Keep building.

You may not be able to see where the journey leads today, but one day you’ll look back and realize those small beginnings were preparing you for something far greater than you could have imagined.

When I don’t have time to do a complete Curl Definition set, I use the fusion foam and the fusion liquid gel took microscope assembly, wrapping the ends of my hair around my index finger diffusing, and go away. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

For decades, the beauty industry has spoken about hair as though there are two categories:
Straight Hair
and
Textured Hair.

But there’s a problem with that distinction.

Straight hair has the same dimensions of texture as all other hair.
When we divide hair into “straight” and “textured,” we create a false binary that encourages us to see hair as isolated categories rather than as a collection of characteristics.

As a result, conversations often become centered around a single visual trait, usually curl pattern, while overlooking the many interconnected dimensions that influence how hair behaves, responds, presents, and functions.

Density.

Porosity.

Elasticity.

Strand Diameter.

Texture Feel.

Texture Movement.

Hair Thresholds.

These characteristics exist whether hair is straight, wavy, curly, coily, kinky, or incongruent.

That’s why I believe all hair exists somewhere along a Texture Movement Spectrum™ rather than within a simple straight-versus-textured divide.

Because understanding hair isn’t about deciding which category it belongs to.

It’s about understanding the full picture.

The more complete our understanding of hair becomes, the more meaningful our consultations, education, recommendations, and outcomes become.

Hair is dynamic.

Texture is dimensional.

And every head of hair deserves to be understood in its entirety.

Hair is dynamic.
Texture is dimensional.
And ALL hair exists somewhere along a Texture Movement Spectrum, from straight to wavy, curly, coily, kinky, and even incongruent texture formations.

The challenge is that for decades, the beauty industry has inderatood hair through isolated categories. But hair is a collection of interconnected characteristics that influence how it behaves, responds, presents, and functions.

When we focus on isolated characteristics, we gain simplicity, lose dimension.
The future of texture education isn’t about just creating more categories. It’s about creating deeper understanding.

That belief became the foundation of my book:
📖 Deciphering the Dynamics of Hair Textures
A resource for professionals, educators, students, brands, and consumers seeking a more comprehensive understanding of hair beyond traditional classification systems.

For Beauty Schools & Educational Institutions:
Explore how the Texture Dynamics Framework™ can expand textured hair education through curriculum, professional development, and modern texture communication.

For Beauty Brands:
Explore consumer-facing education, texture intelligence, and brand messaging opportunities that help create deeper, more meaningful conversations with today’s consumers.
Because understanding hair begins when we start seeing the full picture of hair.

For years, the beauty industry has gradually reduced the word texture to mean Curl pattern. But what happens when we shrink a multidimensional concept into a single visible characteristic?

When someone asks about their texture, they’re rarely asking only about the shape of their curls. They’re trying to understand:
• Why their hair behaves the way it does.
• Why certain products work and others don’t.
• Why their hair shrinks.
• Why it tangles.
• Why it feels different from someone else’s.
• Why it responds differently to moisture, protein, heat, and manipulation.
Yet many texture conversations stop at curl pattern.
The challenge isn’t that curl pattern is unimportant.
The challenge is that curl pattern is only one characteristic among many.

Texture is the collective expression of the characteristics that influence how hair behaves, responds, presents, and functions. When we reduce texture to curl pattern, we risk overlooking the very dimensions that make each head of hair unique.

The future of texture education is about seeing the whole picture of the hair on an individual basis. And that’s what I created the Texture Dynamics Framework to do.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree that the hair care industry has used the word TEXTURE wrong all of this time and to take a critical look at how dissected the thinking towards TEXTURE is it’s easy to see how there’s gaps and understanding. The Texture Dynamics Framework™ is a modernized language system to analyze and communicate hair in a way that bridges the gap of this understanding. Read more about it in my Substack and watch the full video. Link is in the bio. .
