About Salon Services Pricing ... Why isn't a haircut still $35?
Normally, the cost of living increases around 3.5% per year. That all changed in 2020. The world stopped. Everything was disrupted. By 2024, costs for supplies had increased by 10% in a single year. Housing got more expensive. Groceries got more expensive. Gas got more expensive. As markets fluctuated (we live in a free market), prices went up. Corporations have held prices high for their 24% returns as opposed to a past typical of 11% per year, while laying off many employees. Although, they've at least tried to not pass on the costs of rising tariffs, they can't do that forever, especially when most businesses are small businesses. I have seen instances where prices increased by 12% reflecting half of what some tariffs are (taxes) on imports.
This is not a rant about politics. It's a reflection on rising costs for everyday Americans.
While some professionals charge too little, out of fear of losing business, and some are too high for what the market can bear long term, most of us are in the Goldilocks range of just right to make a living and stay off social support.
When we set our prices it's based on our costs, not greed. We are self employed. We have to pay for our own health insurance, business insurance, credit card processing fees, retirement plans, gas to get to work, rent on our work space, mortgage or rent on our homes, utilities, costs of supplies... You get the picture.
A good business minded professional is willing to work within your budget. Just don't expect to pay peanuts when you want caviar.
We are just trying to get by with a little left over at the end of the month. Just like you.
