With all these viral posts about whether or not something is “safe” depending on its ingredients, I felt like this needed to be said!

While certain ingredients are known to trigger skin issues more often than others, triggers for each individual will always vary.

Think of it like food sensitivities. We all have some foods that we aren’t necessarily allergic to, but we never feel great after we eat them. And those same foods may not bother someone else! It doesn’t make them any worse or better.

If you are really trying to narrow down specific ingredients that cause skin issues for you, look to find common ingredients in the products you have noticed your skin gets temperamental with. Even then, it’s always important to remember that formulation matters!

The best way to avoid skin irritation is to find products that work for you, and stick to them. If you aren’t having any problems, don’t worry and don’t go looking for something else!

If you are still looking to see improvement in some areas, talking to a professional who is familiar with common skincare ingredients MAY be able to help you determine which would be the best products to try going forward, based on what is working for you already.

If you’re serious about changing your skin, It is probably best not to get that guidance from a generalized post on Instagram or TikTok, even if it’s from a licensed professional, unless you have arranged for a one on one virtual consult, or to work with them directly.

Not to say any of these “used to” products are bad, but I’ve seemed to find some new (and new to me) formulations that I tend to prefer now.

Above is after one moderate acne clearing chemical peel, done one month AFTER the client had been using a consistent, appropriate home care regimen to reduce inflammation and strengthen her skin barrier.
