Today marks Rosh Chodesh Av, the beginning of the most solemn month in the Jewish calendar.
Our sages teach: Mishenichnas Av, mema’atin b’simcha. When Av enters, we lessen our joy. Not because joy itself is forbidden, but because this is the month that carries the weight of our deepest national losses. The destruction of both Batei Mikdash. The expulsion from Spain. The first World War. Countless tragedies that seem to gather on the same date across the centuries.
Today also begins the Nine Days, an intensified period of mourning that leads us to Tisha B’Av. During these days, we hold back. No meat, no wine, no music, no celebrations. We create space in our lives to feel what has been lost, so that we do not forget why we are still striving.
And yet, this month carries another name. Menachem Av. The Comforter Av. Our tradition teaches that the seed of ultimate redemption is planted precisely in this month, that Moshiach himself will be born on Tisha B’Av, and that the deepest darkness contains within it the beginnings of the greatest light.
This is the paradox of the Jewish story. We do not run from grief. We enter it. We mourn honestly, we remember truthfully, and from within that mourning we begin the work of rebuilding.
As we enter Av, may we hold both truths together. The pain of what has been broken, and the promise of what is still to come.
