We often teach children to think about giving in terms of outcome.

Be kind so others will be kind back.
Be generous and it will come back to you.
Love well and you will be loved well in return.

But life does not always work so neatly.

There will be times when they give their patience and are met with impatience.
Their honesty and are met with deception.
Their care and are met with indifference.

And if we have only taught them to give in order to receive, those moments will harden them.

Because then giving begins to feel foolish.
Kindness begins to feel naive.
Integrity begins to feel conditional.

But what we give was never only about what comes back.

It is also a reflection of who we are choosing to be.

To be generous in a world that is not always generous back.
To be truthful even when dishonesty would be easier.
To act with decency even when someone else has not earned it.

This does not mean teaching children to tolerate disrespect.
It does not mean asking them to overgive, self-abandon, or remain where they are being harmed.

Discernment matters.
Boundaries matter.
Self-respect matters.

But within that, there is a deeper lesson:

We do not let the inconsistency of others decide the quality of our character.

Because what we offer the world may not always return in equal measure.

But it is always saying something about us. ❤️
