In response to recent events concerning the COVID-19 virus and the Governorās Executive orders; 20-04 and 20-08, Iād like to take a moment to express some of the heartfelt concerns of the African American salons and barbershops in Minneapolis and surrounding cities.
As a licensed Cosmetology Manager for over 25+ years I am deeply saddened and extremely concerned about the future of our salon and barbershop communities. Since the late 1800s African American barbershops have been the pillar of our communities. It was a place where we could go to congregate and have intimate conversations about what was going on in our lives and in our world, which at that time in history was a very harsh and difficult time for us. As time passed, and laws changed to allow us the opportunity to own and manage and operate barbershops and salons, the traditions stayed the same. We have built these businesses with hours and hours of blood, sweat and tears. We have spent days and nights, sometimes working 12-13 hour shifts, sacrificing time with family and loved ones to keep our business up and running. We have gone above and beyond what the traditional definition of a barber or stylist is deemed to be.
Most of us are not only stylists or barbers, we are mentors, counselors, psychologists, caregivers, and most importantly family and friends to our clients. We give way more than a simple haircut or style, we give a fresh perspective on life and a even greater dose of self confidence and love!
This pandemic, although tragic by nature is not necessarily the root cause of our frustrations. We as a community are angered and upset at the response of our government officials and the process as a whole. This government shut down not only puts our livelihoods in jeopardy but our families as well. We as a business community are stressed about our futures and the future of our businesses, so much so that we are willing to risk fines and imprisonment for the sake of our survival. We deeply and respectfully accept the mandated Executive Order, but have an inner conflict about protecting ourselves and our heritage.
You may not be aware, but our business and support of the African American communities; lowers crime rates, teaches communication skills, raises self esteem, and empowers others to go find their dream and make it happen! The āAmerican dreamā owning your own business. We literally make the world a more beautiful place to live in.
With all that said, we are demanding to be heard and are requiring the government to do something, anything to assist us during this difficult time. If itās a special funding bill designated strictly for us or business loans or grants to allow us to pay our bills and take care of our families we desire whatever is available to us. Just like you all have promised support to the restaurant industry we feel as though we are just as important. Try walking around without a haircut or shave for a few months...
Iād also like to say, that within each salons and barbershop there are independent contractors who are not the brick and mortar business owners, but owners of another kind. We too have families and bills to pay. One of which being the weekly booth rental payments we make to the owners to help keep the business running effectively and efficiently.
We ask that you recognize our importance as community leaders and request your help.
Respectfully,
Chanda Tolbert

A Note to our Client...As the Covid-19 continues to impact our lives and communities, we at Remix Barber and Beauty would like to take a moment to recognize the seriousness of this pandemic! Because we work in a service industry where our work is literally hands on, we are taking extra precautions to sanitize our environment, and we are asking all clients and visitors to take extra precautions to protect everyone we see on a daily basis. This includes extra hand washing and covered coughing and sneezing!! If you feel sick in anyway we are asking that you not come in for your appointment and that you reschedule for a later date. The welfare of our clients and families are of the utmost importance to us and we want to ensure the safety of all we come in contact with moving forward. We want to keep our business open to serve you, so please letās all work together to keep each other safe!!
Thank you so much for Understanding!
