When I join people for a plant 🌱 walk I like to say,
“i’m going to meet some old friends, who I’d like to introduce you to.”
Plants are not things, not inanimate objects.
They are beings born in the space of deep time, hundreds of millions of years before our species arrived on the scene.
Our Neolithic ancestors were buried with Yarrow before it was called Yarrow.
Before many of my ancestors began speaking with it in Gaelic, calling it
Athair thalún
or “Earth Father.”
People ask me, what is “Celtic herbalism?”
Well it’s an herbalism born out of how the Celtic peoples related to plants traditionally.
But it’s also how Celtic peoples relate with these ancient beings today.
It’s a living breathing thing.
It’s how I use Blue Violet to heal skin disorders.
How Elecampagne, a great lung ally just showed up in the yard in 2019, just as the pandemic hit,
It’s not something you’d find in a museum.
It’s a living breathing tradition that we add to when we remember that we too speak the many languages of plants.
So come along, bring the kids, bring the old ones, on my next plant 🌱 walk:
