Osteoarthritis and exercise are two things most people assume do not mix. After diagnosis, stopping movement feels like the safest option.

The problem is that cartilage does not work like a muscle that tears from overuse. It works more like a sponge.

Cartilage has no blood vessels feeding it directly. Nutrients reach it through the synovial fluid surrounding the joint, and that fluid only circulates when the joint is loaded and released through movement.

A joint that stops moving gradually starves its own cartilage of what keeps it intact.

The muscles surrounding the joint matter just as much. They are the primary shock absorbers. As they weaken from disuse, mechanical load shifts directly onto the cartilage surface, which is already under stress.

That is the cycle that worsens joint damage, and movement is not the cause of it.

A 2022 review published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that exercise stimulates chondrocytes, the cells that maintain cartilage, to produce the structural proteins that keep joint tissue intact.

People who exercised regularly reported less pain, better range of motion, and slower disease progression compared to those who remained sedentary.

Movement type and load still matter. Not every exercise suits every presentation of osteoarthritis. We can help identify what your joint currently tolerates and build a plan from there.

Never in all my time as a PT student, or even during my years working as a practicing physical therapist, did I think my weekend schedule would include treating actual, literal knights. But this past weekend, I was out at an armored combat tournament doing exactly that!

If you think your gym routine is intense, letโ€™s talk about what these modern Buhurt and historical medieval battle athletes put their bodies through. It is absolutely wild:

The Weight: These fighters aren't just carrying a heavy rucksack; they are wearing a full suit of tempered steel and padding that weighs anywhere from 55 to 75+ pounds.

The Workout: Moving in full armor requires over TWICE the energy of normal locomotion. Sprinting, grappling, and swinging a 4-lb longsword or a 9-lb halberd pushes their active burn rate to a staggering 15 to 20+ calories per minuteโ€”equivalent to elite-level wrestling or sprinting while trapped inside a human-shaped oven.

The Aftermath: Between the explosive rounds, pacing the lists in heavy kit, and the massive metabolic demand of the body trying to repair muscle tissue from blunt-force impact, these competitors can easily torch 3,000 to 5,000+ total calories across a single tournament day!

Treating these fighters really hammered home a fundamental truth about what we do: We are all athletes. Being an athlete isn't defined by a jersey, a running track, or a court.

Itโ€™s defined by pushing your physical limits, training with purpose, and demanding peak performance from your body. It just depends on exactly what you want to be athletic in, whether that's a marathon, a crossfit box, strongman, or a full-contact medieval melee.

Huge respect to the warriors who stepped into the lists this weekend. Thanks for keeping your armor polished and your PT busy!

Staying active as you get older is not just about exercise. It is about protecting your independence, improving balance, reducing stiffness, and continuing to do the things you love without fear or limitation.

The good news is that movement can help. Physical therapy can support healthy aging by improving strength, mobility, flexibility, posture, and confidence with movement.

An active lifestyle for older adults may help:

โ€ข Reduce fall risk
โ€ข Improve walking and balance
โ€ข Support joint health
โ€ข Increase energy levels
โ€ข Maintain independence longer
โ€ข Make daily activities feel easier

You do not need intense workouts to stay active. Small, consistent movement and the right support can make a big difference over time.
If you have been feeling less steady, more stiff, or less active lately, now is a great time to focus on your mobility and overall wellness.

Two months later they are seeing real results.

That is what matters most to us. Not the quick fix. Not the impressive claim. Just showing up for every patient and doing the work together until things actually get better.

If something has been bothering you for longer than it should, come in and let us figure it out with you.

Most people don't notice the damage until it's already done.
When the body stops moving, three things happen fast:

1. Aging accelerates because every year of inactivity adds years of wear to the body

2. Bones and muscles weaken leading to falls, fractures and chronic pain

3. Mental health declines as mood, memory and sleep all suffer without movement

โ˜‘๏ธ The body was built to move and it is never too late to start.

If you are ready to move better, feel stronger and get expert guidance on where to begin, we are here for that.

Gut health is connected to digestion, energy, immunity, and even how you feel day to day.

Sometimes the best next step is getting a clearer picture of what is going on internally.

If you want a deeper look at your gut health, you can explore testing here: https://www.thorne.com/u/peakpr

Testing can help guide direction, but the real foundation still comes from consistent habits like fiber intake, hydration, sleep, and stress management.

Start with awareness, then build the basics.
