🦶Bunions (aka Hallux Valgus) are a boney bump at the base of the big toe, can be stubbornly uncomfortable, and become painful enough people opt for surgery. If caught early enough the progression can be haulted or even reversed in the early stages.

🦶 Causes - while genetics can place you at greater risk the main culprit is shoes with too small of a toe box. Especially pointy toed shoes and shoes with a higher heel! The narrow forefoot causes compression of the bones in the feet, especially the first and second ray, adducting the big toe towards the others. Shoes with a smaller forefoot also cause eventual weakening of the intrinsic muscles in the foot making it hard to volitionally splay the toes without shoes on.

🦶 Treatment is multi-factorial.
🙌🏼 Manual therapy can aid in loosening the tighter intrinsic muscles between the feet with a pin and stretch technique and/or dry needling of the foot.
💪🏼 Strengthening the abductor hallucis can help pull the great toe back into a straighter alignment and reduce crowding against the second toe. Strengthening of the foot intrinsics and arch can also lead to a greater toe splay and improves pressure distribution throughout the foot during gait.
💅🏼 Toe spacers (my favorite are Yoga Toes) are for more than just pedicures. They can be a great aid in stretching the toes apart and make for greater adherence to a stretching program due to their ease of use.
👟 Opting for shoes with a wider toe box or functional minimalist shoes can allow for greater toe splay during gait and improve strength of the intrinsic foot muscles. One easy way to tell if your shoes are wide enough is the insole test. Take your insole insert out of your shoe and step on it as shown in the last slide. If part of your foot is hanging off the side it’s too narrow for natural toe splay.
🦶 Walking barefoot has been shown to decrease peak pressure at the heel and metatarsal regions when done habitually. It also allows for more natural splaying of the toes and a return to more anatomical function of the foot.

These are the most common cues I use and the sequence of them to help reduce a hips forward / kyphotic posture.

The other team had already finished... that’s why I’m smiling here, but who else loves team holiday workouts with their friends?

My other favorite is all the 12 days of Christmas workouts 🎄 💪🏼

Post your favorite 12 Days workout below. Maybe I’ll do a new one this year!

Today was one of those days when you write a 5 round workout, cut it to 4 rounds before you start, cut it to 3 after the first round, try to quit after the second round, and don’t let yourself because your partner won’t quit with you.

Thanks .town23 for the push to keep going. Thank you Murph for all the puppy kisses as I laid on the ground between almost every turn. And thank you for these new born primitive shorts! Love the fun colors they have.

9 more days and we get to compete at the 👏🏼

Team training for the with baby hand offs. Bodhi was almost as sweaty as us by the end, but he was a good sport about it! Luckily this isn’t part of the real competition, but if it were we’d be ready!!

So these happened this week. I wasn’t planning on trying a bar MU this week. And I don’t have a plan on when I’ll try a ring MU either, but something in me said I think I can do one now so I did. Actually I did 7 total and I was SORE AF! Haha, I guess that’s what 9 months off of a movement will do to you.
Overall I’m super stoked with how my recovery has gone. I think staying as active as I did throughout the pregnancy really helped me. I really slowed down the most for the last 5 weeks of it and the first 7 weeks post partum, so probably about 12 weeks (almost 3 months) total I was doing pretty minimal weight and no gymnastics.
Now 14 weeks post partum I’ve deadlifted up to 185lbs, done a barbell workout with 85lbs, done rope climbs and butterfly pull-ups, and ran a mile and change multiple times. The only things left to try are double unders, kipping T2B, ring MU, and heavier lifts at some point. Again I have no real plan or timeline. I’ll get to them when I feel ready to!

When I first got pregnant a local photographer contacted me to ask if I’d like to do a progressive photo shoot every other week and I said YES that’s an awesome idea. He even came to my house and photographed me in my garage while the gym was shut down during CoVid! The end result was pretty awesome!
My biggest one yet!

For those who missed Functional Fitness on Netflix, it has a new home on Amazon Prime. This was a fun documentary to be a part of. Covering the stories of people ranging from competitive exercises to those looking to find fitness and fight chronic disease, if you were around for the earlier days of this movement you’ll definitely find some nostalgia in the film.

Every Sunday a group of us get together for a longer partner workout. Sometimes we have a big crowd, sometimes we have a small one, but it’s always a good time.
