As I was listening to a podcast today, I heard the host and guest talk about how they keep photos of their childhood selves on their computer desktop as a reminder of the powerful creature who held them through their early years. The concept of every previous version of ourselves living inside of us as nesting dolls was proposed, and I thought it was a beautiful visual. I thought of trees and their rings and the concept of spiral dynamics. And pretty quickly I had pulled this entire conversation up into the realm of my head. My imagination has a tendency to take over quickly. As an artist, this can be a blessing, AND it's important for me to have a way to include the rest of my being in the experience.

It got me thinking about embodiment - a word that gets thrown around in wellness circles and on social media so frequently these days that it's become challenging to know what on earth folks mean when they say it. Because, truthfully, we are all ALREADY embodied. We are having this physical experience. In our body.

But are we listening? Do we notice her seasons, her weather, her moods? Do we hear her whispers or only her giant roars? Do we know her song or do we look outside of her constantly for guidance?

Do we have a reciprocal and nurturing relationship with our bodies? Do we show up consistently and with love? Have we found ways that work for us?

🙋‍♀️ The Love Shack is one of my ways.

At The Love Shack we have fun, we workout, we play on a pole, and we dance. We move slowly, connected to breath and to the inner rhythm of our bodies. We feel the watery emotion from which all music springs forth. And that guides us into dance.

I opened The Love Shack because when I do this movement I am brought into direct contact with the spirit in the picture above. She gets it. She knows there's no getting it right.

All of us have some version of that wisdom inside.

This past weekend, I went to The Omega Institute in NY for the Meggan Watterson, “Mary Magdalene Revealed” workshop. There were four sessions. Each session would have a meditation, a teaching from the Gospel Of Mary, another meditation, and songs by Jake Wesley Rogers. After the workshop on Friday night, I knew how much I could potentially learn over the weekend, if I surrendered. I wanted to go because I had fallen in love with the book, Mary Magdalene Revealed. What most Christians are not aware of are a few books that were intentionally left out of the Bible mainly because they show women in leadership. Yep. Books that were carefully hidden in caves, walls, clay pots buried under ground, so that some day, with Divine timing, their truths would be shared with the world. The Gospel of Mary was discovered in January 1896, at an antiques market in Cairo by a German scholar named Carl Reinhardt. Talk about Divine timing. So many of us can fear what we don’t know…..or what turns upside down what we were taught in childhood and have clung to our entire lives.



The question we were to ask ourselves for the first meditation was “what is my intention this weekend”. What immediately came to me was to live the knowledge I learn in love. And that I’m safe to give all my love away because it only returns. That can be scary when we’ve been hurt. Been hurt by past relationships, friends, family. But the practice for ourselves is Mercy. To release the seven powers of the ego (also known as the seven deadly sins), to give those powers over to God, and let love, forgiveness, and light flow in. We must hand over the heavy. And that takes true authentic work and excavation. And it’s not always obvious or easy.



Case in point. Day two. Meggan talked about the seven powers of the ego. And freeing ourselves from whatever power has its hold on us is inner transformation. With Mary, she chooses love from within her, and sees with the eye of the heart. We began the meditation and we were to ask ourselves what power was needing to be transformed. I felt “intelligence/ignorance” explode in my mind. I felt the shame I used to feel when someone I loved told me I was stupid, I compared myself to my insanely brilliant friends, to the women in the room with me….and I felt unworthy to even be there. I then listened to my higher self/the Good/the love from within. I was told that I have a huge heart that expands. That I am an empath who can help others. That my gift is love. When I came out of the meditation, I still felt like garbage. I pulled my knees into my chest and silently wept for the remainder of the workshop. I needed to talk with Meggan. I was not about to share with this group of women that I felt turned inside out and absolutely worthless. I knew I would bawl my eyes out at the microphone, and probably be gasping for breath. Meggan had her book signing after the workshop on Saturday, and I got in the back of the line. I waited about an hour. I just didn’t know what to do except talk to her. Since this was her meditation, since she had been studying the Gospel of Mary for 20 years, I hoped she could help me. When I told her what had happened, she replied, “You need to go back into the mediation. There is still healing that needs to be done.” Well, that was the last thing I wanted to hear. But it was what I needed to hear.



I spoke with Jenny later. She told me she could tell me all day everyday how smart I am, but it has to come from within. I had dinner with a new friend named Tess. We talked for a few hours, and I shared my experience with her. She told me that just from our brief time together, my emotional intelligence was off the charts. That meant a lot. Especially as an empath.



I had clarity the next morning. I felt sorry for the people who wanted to tear me down because of my ability to love. Truly. To be threatened by someone's heart instead of accepting of it is very sad. And I let go. Meggan also checked on me and we talked about having to “resurrect” the love from within us! And how emotional intelligence is so needed in this world. I felt like my gift of sharing my heart expanded. I felt actually healed from that power of my ego. And beyond thankful for the awareness that more healing needed to be done.



I now am noticing other areas in my life that I thought I had healed, but seeing that there is still work to be done. And I’m here for it.

This is what happens when we come together in love, openness, and curiosity. I will forever be touched and inspired by the women and handful of men who were at the retreat. Their stories, their courage, and their openness to a room full of strangers was nothing short of powerful and running over with absolute love.
