Tuesday Tips and Tricks: How do I use micellar water?
1)As a makeup remover, 2)as a cleanser when traveling or camping, 3)to cleanse in the morning (when you’re performing a more through cleanse at night before bed), 4)to clean makeup brushes, 5)to cleanse after exercising, or 6)if you have very sensitive skin that doesn’t respond well to any type of facial cleanser, including oil-based. For most people, micellar water shouldn’t be used as a substitute for a cleanser, but is more appropriate as an addition to a skincare routine. Every face is different, so if it works for you, you should use it.
Friday Fun Facts: What is micellar water?
Micellar water is water that contains surfactants, which in the case of micellar water is a compound that reduces the surface tension between water and oil. What that means in layman’s terms is that micellar water is a more effective cleanser than plain water because the surfactants allow it to remove oil and dirt from your skin. Is it effective as a cleanser? In this aesthetician’s opinion it’s similar to using makeup wipes to cleanse your face. It’s a solution when you’re in a pinch but shouldn’t be used as a substitute for proper cleansing routine. People who wear a lot of makeup, or have oily or acne-prone skin, most likely can’t rely on micellar water for cleansing. It may work well for those with sensitive skin, but an oil-based cleanser can be appropriate for sensitive types as well. Micellar water is best reserved as a make-up remover only or for use in place of cleanser when there is no water readily available, such as when camping or traveling.
Tuesday Tips and Tricks: 7 ways to treat rosacea. 1)Identify and avoid triggers that cause flare-ups; this usually include spicy foods and alcohol. 2)Use sunscreen. 3)Avoid using toner and other drying products on the skin; switch to gentle skincare products made for sensitive skin types. 4)Apply an azelaic acid serum or cream to reduce inflammation. 5)Look for products with calming ingredients, such as oatmeal, lavender, calendula, and linden flower. 6)A doctor can prescribe an antibiotic to control bumps and redness if your rosacea is severe. 7)Last but not least, try a Calming Facial at Drake Day Spa.
Friday Fun Facts: Do I have acne or rosacea?
Because rosacea is often accompanied by small pimples and bumps on the skin, many people mistake it for acne. Rosacea, however, is also characterized by redness and tiny dilated blood vessels on the face. Topical acne medications might help dry up pimples but likely won’t treat the underlying inflammatory disorder that is causing the issue, so it’s important to know the difference. Watch this space for next Tuesday’s Tips and Tricks on treating rosacea.
Tuesday Tips and Tricks:
Have you tried everything to treat your acne? The following are 6 risk-free methods for treating all types of acne: 1)Add a salicylic acid moisturizer or toner to exfoliate dead skin cells and dissolve excess oil. 2)Apply up to 2% benzoyl peroxide on breakouts to kill bacteria under the surface of the skin. 3)Try a sulfur mask to dry up acne papules and pustules. 4)Add a retinol cream to your routine to fight inflammation, exfoliate, decrease oil production, and encourage cell turnover. 5)Try an azelaic acid serum to reduce inflammation and keratin production. 6)Visit Drake Day Spa for an Acne Clearing Facial or a Microdermabrasion treatment.
Friday Fun Facts:
Microdermabrasion can be an effective way to treat acne because it can unclog pores, increase circulation to promote healing and drainage of waste products in cells, and reduce scarring by encouraging collagen production. However, this treatment can’t be performed in areas where there are active pustules (commonly known as whiteheads), because it will simply spread bacteria to other areas of the face, making acne worse. There is no downtime with a microdermabrasion treatment, but you must be especially careful to avoid sun exposure for a few days following the procedure.
Tuesday Tips and Tricks: Getting rid of ingrown hairs.
Don’t use a sharp object to try and dig the hair out of your skin; this will likely lead to scarring. However, if you can grab the hair with tweezers, you may be able to pull it out. When a hair is trapped too far under the surface of the skin, exfoliate twice a day to remove oils and other debris that could be trapping it. Optional treatments include rubbing an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory product such as raw honey or tea tree oil into the area twice daily to moisturize and coax out the hair.

We had a visitor today, Rube’s Rocks, in much need of a massage!
Friday Fun Facts: What is that bump under my beard?
Most likely, it’s not a pimple, but folliculitis, which is an inflamed hair follicle. Sometimes the follicle can become infected by bacteria, and sometimes there may actually be a hair that has become trapped under a layer of skin - in other words, an ingrown hair. To prevent folliculitis, cleanse the area twice a day, exfoliate two or three times a week, and moisturize daily. Watch this space for next Tuesday’s Tips and Tricks on how to get rid of an ingrown hair.
