Potato juice benefits for skincare

DIY brightening mask - To make the juice first, peel the potato, cut it in pieces and then grind it in a juicer. Apply the juice to your face with your fingertips. Let it stay for good 15-20 minutes and then wash it off nicely. You can also add a tablespoon of honey to the potato juice for moisture. Repeat the process daily for desired results.
For skin lightening - Mix potato juice with lemon juice. As potato has bleaching properties, it can lighten dark skin in a natural way. Apply the mixture on the dark patches. Done regularly, the dark areas will be significantly lightened.
Skincare pack - For this, you will need - potato juice, rice flour, rose water, lemon juice, and honey (if you have dry skin). Add two tablespoons of potato juice to the rice flour. Then, add rose water, honey, and mix it properly. Make sure the paste is not too thick or watery, otherwise you will have a hard time applying it to your face. Once you apply, the next step will require you to message it nicely and gently in circular motions for 2-5 minutes. Leave the paste on for 15 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. For better results, do it once every week.
For pore cleansing - Mix five spoons of potato juice and a spoon of baking soda with water. Apply it on your face to cleanse the pores of your skin.
For treating dark circles and puffy eyes - Take an equal quantity of potato juice and cucumber juice and mix them together. Apply the juice under and around your eyes and let it stay for 15 minutes. Both potato and cucumber are known to have a soothing effect which will help in cooling down tired and puffy eyes.
For smooth and flawless skin - For this, you will be needing Multani Mitti (Fullers Earth) as well. Mix potato juice with lemon juice and Multani Mitti. Make a thick paste and then apply it to your skin. Use this pack to get flawless skin.

How to Have Clear Skin with Home Remedies

There's no shortage of acne products and medications out there, but many of them can be pretty harsh on your skin. If you're interested in trying out a few natural home remedies, you've come to the right place! We've created a helpful list of options for you to try and we'll walk you through how each one works.

1. Apple cider vinegar

Dilute it with water and use it as a bacteria-busting toner. Start with a freshly washed face. Then, mix 1 part ACV with 4 parts water in a clean bottle or container. Pour a small amount of the mixture on a cotton ball and pass it gently over your face once a day to tone your skin.
Spot test the mixture on the back of your hand before using it on your face.
Start slowly with 1-2 applications a week. If your skin tolerates it well, you can work up to daily use.

2. Green tea bags

Green tea can soothe breakouts and kill acne-causing bacteria. Grab a green tea bag, heat up water like you normally would, and pop the bag in the water to brew the tea. When you’re done, take out the bag and let it cool to room temperature. Then, put the bag directly on your breakout and leave it for 20 minutes. Do this once a day until your pimples clear up.
A second option: let the brewed green tea cool off, soak a washcloth in it, and place the washcloth over your face for 20 minutes.
Some studies have shown that topical applications can help to reduce acne.
You can also shop for creams, lotions, or gels containing 2%-3% green tea. Just apply the product to the affected area twice a day.

3. Aloe vera gel

Gel straight from the plant is best but store-bought gel works, too. If you have access to an aloe vera plant, carefully cut open a leaf, scoop out the gel with a clean spoon or finger, and apply the gel directly to the affected area. The gel is moisturizing so your skin will soak it right up. Do this twice a day—once in the morning, once in the evening.
Studies show that aloe vera gel works best for mild acne. It’s less effective for severe and cystic acne.
This technique is even more powerful if you use it alongside prescription acne medication like Retin-A.[6]
Aloe vera is effective because it contains antioxidants, enzymes, and vitamins, along with anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Tea tree oil

Spot treat pimples with diluted tea tree oil or use a 5% gel preparation. Soak a cotton swab in water, open the tea tree oil bottle, and gently run the swab along the inside of the cap to pick up a tiny amount of oil. Then, apply the diluted oil directly to your pimples each night after washing your face.[7]
Tea tree may help clear up mild to moderate acne.
Since tea tree oil can make your skin sensitive to sunlight, it's best to apply it before bed and wash it off in the morning.
Some experts say undiluted tea tree oil is safe to apply topically in small amounts. Try the diluted technique first until you know how your skin reacts.
Tea tree oil is toxic if you swallow it, so be careful!

5. Egg white mask

Try egg white mask. Start with a freshly washed face. Separate the egg yolk from the white and beat the white with a fork until it gets frothy. Then, use your fingers or a cotton ball to apply a thin layer of egg white all over your face. Leave it on for 10-20 minutes before rinsing your skin thoroughly with cold water.
Pat your skin dry and follow up with your favorite moisturizer.
Be gentle when you apply the egg white! If you rub too hard, you could irritate your skin.

6. Brewer’s yeast

Taking the yeast by mouth once a day may help clear up your acne. Brewer’s yeast is usually used to make beer and bread, but it has shown promising results as an acne-buster, too! Just dissolve 2 grams of dried brewer’s yeast in juice or water and drink it down. You can do this up to 3 times a day.
If you have yeast allergies, diabetes, or Crohn’s disease, avoid this technique.
If drinking a shot of yeast sounds unappetizing, try sprinkling it over food instead!

7. Crushed aspirin paste

This works best for blackheads and whiteheads. Aspirin soothes irritated skin and has mild exfoliating properties that can help unplug your pores and clear up zits. Just crush up 2 OTC aspirin tablets into a fine powder and mix it with 2 US tbsp (30 ml) of water until it forms a paste. Then, apply the paste to the affected area and rinse it off after 1-2 minutes.
Salicylic acid is a popular ingredient in acne products. Aspirin is a simple form of salicyclic acid, which is why it can help knock out your pimples.

8. Zinc supplements

Take 15-30 mg of zinc daily and track your progress after a few weeks. Zinc may help with acne because it encourages wound healing and reduces inflammation. Just don’t take more than the recommended dose since it can make you feel bloated and cause diarrhea. If you notice a metallic taste in your mouth after taking zinc, don’t worry—that's normal.

Studies have shown that zinc supplements can help clear up mild to moderate acne.[16]
If you experience serious symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and headaches, stop taking the supplement.

9. Cold and warm compresses

The cold soothes swelling and the warmth helps to draw out pus. Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and hold it over the pimple for 5-10 minutes. Take a 10-minute break before applying the ice for another 5-10 minutes. Then, soak a clean washcloth in warm water and hold it over the affected area for 10-15 minutes. You can repeat this process 3-4 times a day.

10. DIY face scrub

Whip up a simple face scrub once a week to fight blackheads. Exfoliating helps with acne because it removes dead skin and helps clean out your pores. Mix your ingredients together, apply the scrub, and gently massage your skin using circular motions for 3-5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat your skin dry.

For a simple acne-busting scrub: peel and mash 1 whole kiwi, stir in 2 tsp (4.2 g) of brown sugar, and add a few drops of olive oil.
Be careful not to overdo it since exfoliating too often can make your acne worse. 1-2 times a week is plenty.

11. Witch hazel

Use witch hazel as a refreshing toner after washing your face. Just wet a cotton ball or pad with the witch hazel and swipe it over your freshly washed skin. Then, follow up with your favorite moisturizer.[22]
Witch hazel has some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that may help fight acne and reduce redness.

12. Daily cleansing

Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser. Sticking to a simple cleansing routine is one of the best ways to combat acne. To keep your skin clear, wash once in the morning and once at night before bed. Apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser with your fingertips, massage gently, and rinse with lukewarm water.

Sweating can make breakouts worse. If you play sports, exercise, wear a helmet, or just naturally sweat a lot during the day, try to wash your face as soon as you can. 🌸

Virgin coconut oil

Everything You Need to Know About Photoaging

Aging is a natural process. It’s something that happens to all of us starting the day we’re born. But, have you ever wondered why some people look much older than they are while others seem ageless?

Besides the genetic lottery, there’s something bigger at play in the world of how our skin ages. Because, believe it or not, sun exposure contributes to 80% of the visible signs of aging!1

We’re here to explain the effects of this phenomenon – also known as photoaging – plus the essential steps to help prevent and repair it.

Let’s get started.

First, let’s talk sunlight
The sun is an essential part of life, contributing to our mood and well-being, while also playing a key role in the synthesis of vitamin D. However, the sun continually emits something called electromagnetic radiation.

What is photoaging?
At ISDIN, we talk a lot about photoaging. In fact, we consider ourselves experts in the matter. But what is photoaging, exactly? The key lies in that little prefix “photo”; meaning “relating to light.” And in this case, the UV light emitted from the sun.

“Photoaging refers to the process where UV radiation accelerates the signs of skin aging, such as dark spots and fine lines,” shares Aurora Garre, MD, ISDIN Medical Director. And it does so more than anything else in your environment or skin exposome.

Here’s how it happens:

Step 1:UV radiation reaches your skin

Those UVA rays we mentioned? They’re responsible for long-term damage and photoaging. “Deeply penetrating into the skin and breaking down collagen, UVA radiation contributes to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.” says Dr. Garre.

And UVA rays can be sneaky. Unlike UVB rays, they don’t cause sunburns or any immediate changes to your skin. And they definitely don’t take time off. UVA radiation reaches you while you’re outdoors or indoors, freely passing through windows and causing long-term effects on your skin.

Step 2: Too much sun produces free radicals in the body

This UV radiation, in turn, can provoke something called free radicals (unstable molecules). Free radicals break down proteins at the deepest layers of the skin, causing both cell and DNA damage.

Step 3: The body tries to fight off the harmful free radicals

Luckily, your body has a natural defense against these free radicals: antioxidant production. Dr. Garre explains, “Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals and counter the effects of UV radiation.”

Step 4: When it’s all too much, signs of aging show up

What happens when the number of free radicals becomes too great for your natural antioxidant defenses to fight off? That’s called “oxidative stress” and it’s what leads to – you guessed it – visible signs of aging.

What does sun-damaged skin look like?

Skin aging is a natural (and unavoidable) process. Our body slows the production of elastin and collagen over time, causing the skin to lose elasticity.

What about when we add sun damage into the mix? Turns out, “Sun exposure can invite the visible signs of skin aging to appear up to 20 years early,” advises Dr. Garre. And while signs of aging are nothing to be afraid of, you probably don’t want to speed things up.

Photodamage is the main cause of these common skin concerns:

Fine lines and wrinkles
Dark spots and uneven skin tone
Dullness
Loss of firmness

Can you prevent photoaging?
Fortunately, there are four key things we can do to take care of our skin and ward off photoaging. It’s essential to develop these sun protection habits – and the earlier, the better.

1. Use a good sunscreen every day
Using sunscreen daily decreases the number of UV rays absorbed by the skin, protecting it from harmful sun exposure. So, make sure to protect your skin from the sun’s radiation every day, in every season.

2. Apply sunscreen properly
Here are some quick tips on how to apply sunscreen, the right way:

Pay special attention to sun-exposed areas, particularly your face, neck, decolletage, and hands to help reduce the visible signs of photoaging.
Build sunscreen into your morning skincare routine. Apply 20-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours.

Dispense two lines of sunscreen from the bottom of the finger to the tip to protect your face and neck. For body sunscreen, two shot-glasses-worth is generally considered enough.
Lips are also particularly prone to photoaging, as the skin on them is so delicate. So be sure to wear a lip balm with at least SPF 30.

3. Avoid the sun at critical times
We can’t turn the sun off when we feel like it, but we can limit our exposure when the sun’s rays are more harmful. Try to limit sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV radiation is usually at its strongest. Or check out the current UV index in your area to get the most accurate info.

4. Rely on your wardrobe
You can also protect your skin from the sun and photoaging with protective clothing. Try to keep the most sensitive areas of your body covered, like your face, neck, and chest.

Good quality sunglasses will also help to protect your eyes from sun damage. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has some great tips on choosing the ideal sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Can sun-damaged skin be repaired?
Already seeing changes in your skin and wondering if it’s too late to reverse sun damage? Not to worry. There are three key things that can help tackle the signs of photoaging. Take note!

1. Repair skin stress with antioxidants
As we mentioned, antioxidants are great at combating oxidative stress and in turn, photoaging. So if you’re looking to repair photoaging from sun damage on skin over time, products containing vitamin C and other antioxidants are the ideal choice.

Serums, in particular, are straightforward formulas that give your skin the daily antioxidant care it deserves. Try a daily antioxidant serum like Flavo-C Ultraglican each morning.
