In honor of Homeownership Month, Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative is thrilled to host its 5th Annual Housing Event, celebrating the pivotal role of homeownership in stabilizing communities and fostering generational wealth.
In partnership with HousingNOLA, we are proud to present a screening of "RESIDUE" by Merawi Gerima. Following the screening, we will hold a short panel discussion focusing on the impacts of gentrification, the importance of homeownership in building wealth, and the implications of the current economy on future buyers.
"RESIDUE" follows aspiring filmmaker Jay (Obinna Nwachukwu) as he returns to his childhood neighborhood in Washington, DC, which has been gentrified beyond recognition. Alienated from his friends, troubled by the disappearance of his best friend, and unsure of his place in this new community, Jay confronts issues of identity, gentrification, and loss.
Described as “a fleeting and haunting lament for what is lost to gentrification, and other tolls on Black life in America,” "RESIDUE" (Merawi Gerima, 2020, 90 minutes) tells the story of a young man returning to his old neighborhood and explores his evolving relationship with the spaces he once called home. Released by Ava DuVernay’s independent film collective, Array, this intimate debut from director Merawi Gerima echoes the works of his father, Haile Gerima, and fellow Black filmmakers from the late 1960s UCLA cohort like Charles Burnett and Julie Dash.
