Day 130. Teera still fights SMA with a smile. Treatment is still 13 crores away. Waiting is exhausting.

At her 4-month mark, Teera started having a severe cough build up in her throat and lungs. On 14 December, we had to rush her to our nearby hospital for mucus suctioning as she went breathless and had a panic episode. Since that day, there is a suction machine at home and she needs manual suctioning 3 – 4 times a day.

On 17 December, she had a Barium swallow test. X-ray showed severe stomach reflux and pharyngeal reflux that causes liquids to climb up into her nose. Teera feeds on semisolid foods now based on doctor’s advice, and if she continues to have reflux issues in the next 2 weeks, she will need to undergo surgery to place a G-tube.

Teera will visit her feeding therapist tomorrow. We will discuss strategies on what the best foods are, how to keep her nutrition levels up and how to feed her so that she does not choke.

Every day is a repeat of nebulization, suctioning, then feeding. We are afraid that she will get weaker if we can’t feed her. We live in constant fear that we may suction too much and that she might have a throat injury. We check her oxygen levels, half-hoping she doesn’t need to be hauled away to the hospital, only to catch an infection and be disqualified from getting the treatment.

Day 130 of not sleeping at night, SCARED that Teera may not wake up the next morning.
