As a parent and a dentist myself, I want your child to have an enjoyable experience going to the dentist .As a parent you play an important role in making that possible. Here are some helpful tips!😁

⁃ Give your child a brief overview of where they are going and what is expected of them. Read a book or watch a video beforehand. Dora the Explorer has a great book- Dora Goes to the Dentist.

⁃ Have your child practice opening wide and staying open while you brush their teeth.

⁃ Schedule the appointment for a time best suited to your child.

⁃ If your child will be having dental work with anesthetic, consider giving them some food beforehand. Eating with a numb mouth afterwards can lead to injuries to their cheeks, lips or tongues.

⁃ Stay calm and relaxed. Children are like little sponges. They absorb everything, including dental anxiety. Try to keep an open mind to the fact that dental visits can be positive experiences.

⁃ Even if something negative happens, be positive about the experience. If you react with negativity, this will just make future dental visits more uncomfortable and difficult.

⁃ You may even want to consider rewarding your kids with something special. Going to their favorite restaurant for lunch, for example, or buying them a new toy as a reward.

Remember that you the parent are crucial in helping your child learn to trust the dentist and develop a positive attitude toward their dental health. It is so rewarding when a child leaves the dental office with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Around 15% of adults in US suffer from bruxism, a condition where you repeatedly grind and clench your teeth. Most people suffer from sleep bruxism, meaning they grind at night, although awake bruxism also occurs.

This condition can cause a host of painful side effects if not treated: jaw pain, facial pain, broken or worn teeth, headaches, and earaches to name a few.
