Something which my T1D definitely has an impact on is the quality of my sleep. Not only do I sleep fewer hours than persons without T1D, but my sleep is also of poorer quality and affected by more disturbances. This means that my sleep often isn't sufficient which in turn has an impact on my daytime functioning.
ββββββ
One of the reasons why my sleep is not only worse but also shorter is the fact that I often wake up at night. Sometimes my blood sugar is so low that I have to get up and eat/drink something, stay awake for a while & wait until I've reached a normal blood sugar level again. This can last for several minutes or hours which means that I am sometimes not even tired anymore and have problems falling asleep again. When my blood sugar is high during the night, I have to get up several times to p*e and drink some water because I am so thirsty.
ββββββ
A common sleeping disorder in people with T1D face is sleep apnea. This means that a person stops and starts breathing repeatedly whilst they sleep, which prevents them from falling into a deeper state of sleep. People with type 1 diabetes are also more likely to suffer from insomnia and narcolepsy.
ββββββ
The problem is that poor sleep quality also has an impact on my blood sugar levels, which means that a bad night is often followed by a bad day. This can end up in a vicious circle and be very exhausting, not only physically but also mentally. It happens so rarely that I simply sleep through the night, although it is so important to sleep well and sufficiently - especially in a stressful time.

Many refer to diabetes as the "Invisible Disease" πΆ
β
ββββββ
Remember that just because something may not be visible to you, it doesn't mean it isn't there. Diabetes is only invisible to those who do not experience it. You never know what someone is dealing with just by their outward appearance. That's why it is so important to be empathetic and kind!

What other stresses do you feel pull at you?
I guess living in this current environment where the fear of Covid 19 instills constant added stress itβs hard to not have these effects contribute to our overall mental and physical health.
ββββββ
If you feel that all this additional stress is affecting the way you manage your diabetes, and your mental health, please talk to your health provider and reach out for help. You are not alone and you should not try and navigate through this on your own.
Itβs ok not to be ok, reach out and ask for help.

We were supposed to be back in Europe this week, but my doctor recommended I donβt fly right now, but rather focus on getting this anemia situation sorted out first.
ββββββ
So Tobias and I treated ourselves to a day by a nice hotel pool. When Iβm just sitting, is about the only time I donβt feel the anemia symptoms, so this is perfect π
ββββββ
Since my doctor recommended I skip the gym for now Iβve only been (slowly) walking daily. The main difference Iβve noticed in my blood sugar management is that the feet-on-the-floor phenomenon is hitting me aggressively harder than normal.
ββββββ
The feet-on-the-floor phenomenon is when blood sugars start rising as the body dumps glucose into the bloodstream to give you the energy to start the day. The body is trying to be helpful π Itβs different from the Dawn phenomenon but managed the same way, more insulin.
ββββββ
Corrected it with 1.5 units this morning, and now I have this beautiful blood sugar before lunch π₯³.
ββββββ
I donβt have much of an appetite, so having to work on eating enough. This is SO weird to me, Iβve not had an appetite, Iβm one of those people whoβs always hungry. But since Iβm not eating that much, that could explain why my overall insulin need isnβt changing much despite me being significantly more inactive.

The urine is purified in the same way as mains water (water supplied by the public water supply system) is purified, with the sugar molecules removed and added to the mash stock to accelerate the whisky's fermentation process. β
β
ββββββ
β¨ The original idea came from an (unverified) story a man heard about a pharmaceutical company that supposedly set up a factory next to an old people's home and would swap cushions and soft toys for the residents' urine. They'd then process the urine to remove the chemicals that had passed straight through the dilapidated endocrine systems of the patients, which could then be put straight back into new medicine.

π₯ Have you ever air-fried bacon?! Itβs just as easy as baking it in the oven but itβs faster with the air fryer π anyway, hereβs whatβs in it: lettuce, ham, turkey, bacon, provolone cheese, avocado, pickles, cucumbers, red onions, and the dressing is just extra light olive oil and red wine vinegar with Italian seasoning on top! Iβve been making these lately but I havenβt made one in a couple of weeks π

Many people think carbohydrates cause diabetes but studies have shown that in fact, it is excess fat inside cells that cause insulin resistance. π€π°
βοΈ How does the fat collect inside the cell? Mainly due to diet (excess calories, refined carbs, high-fat diets, processed foods, advanced glycation product, inflammation which drive mitochondrial dysfunction, toxins, etc) that cause insulin resistance.ππ§
ββββββ
π Carbs are not the enemy and avoiding carbs will not reverse insulin resistance.π
ββββββ
β
Normally, if our blood sugar is high (after a meal), insulin is released from our pancreas. Insulin is the key that unlocks the doors on the cells and allows sugar to enter. The blood sugar then normalizes because sugar has gone into the cells where they can now produce energy. Everyone is happy. πβ¨
ββββββ
π Insulin resistance occurs when insulin can no longer open that lock to drive sugar from the blood into cells - why? Because that lock is hindered by the fat that has collected inside the cells. (Causes mentioned above but a big factor is processed meats and excess animal proteins). π§π
ββββββ
β
In the past, I had mentioned how low carb can help with type 2 diabetes. However, I realize now that low carb only goes around the actual problem and does not deal with the root cause of the issue.
The roles of fat and protein played in insulin resistance (even though the data showing this goes way back) tends to get missed. π§β¨οΈ

Every day I wake up I get started with my day and I never show weakness despite diabetes breathing down my neck. This race between me and diabetes is often described as a marathon but the truth is thatβs a lie because this race has no end.
ββββββ
In a battle of survival, I have no option to be strong because thatβs so only option I have and the slightest sign of weakness means diabetes knocks me down. Itβs always chasing me and forcing me to move on, never letting me stop this can be good donβt get me wrong but we all reach stages where we are tired and out of breath.
ββββββ
Sometimes we need breaks and time to recovery but when a chronic illness is chasing you, rest isnβt an option, you either continue moving forward no matter how slow or you surrender and let the beast win. So every day I strive forward, the further the distance the better but I also understand somedays itβs harder so Iβm allowed to slow down.
