The large doors at Sea Ranch, the rambling creative compound in Montauk that architect-designers Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch have cultivated for the last 20 years, have no screens.
On summer evenings, the co-founders of the architecture and design practice leave them wide open—embracing all manner of wildlife that drifts indoors from the lush grounds beyond. “We kind of love that,” Standefer muses. Rabbits and butterflies are not the only houseguests that CULTURED’s guest editors have ushered through Sea Ranch’s doors. Members of the duo’s Montauk community—a cadre of the likeminded, from passionate rock collectors to fashion designers and gallerists—seem always to be arriving or departing.

“This issue is a love letter to a place where art, nature, and history converge,” Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer tell CULTURED.
The duo behind —and the guest editors of our eighth Hamptons edition—have built a vibrant, bustling architecture and design practice in New York that, between its restaurants and shop, seems to be evolving at lightspeed.
But it’s Sea Ranch, the couple’s wild, abundant Montauk oasis, that has become the center of their creative universe. Out on the easternmost tip of Long Island, surrounded by an orchard fruit trees and a stone’s throw from their painting and ceramics studios, the pair slow down, carving out space for their instincts.
For Standefer and Alesch, guest editing the issue was a true labor of love. Its pages reveal members of the pair’s creative community in their truest forms—marinating in their studios and communing with nature. New York is our kiln where we crank up the heat,” Alesch says in the issue. “Montauk is where we shape and form.”
