This week’s featured trainer is Chad Canter of PowerNYC Training. Chad primarily trains out of Mid City Gym at 345 w. 42nd St in Manhattan and can set up strongman training at other facilities in the NYC area. He is available for in-home workouts as well. Chad is a former English Professor turned strongman competitor. If you don’t know what strongman is, it’s where Hafthór Júlíus Björnsson, best known for his role as The Mountain in HBO’s Game of Thrones, competes.

Chad is a National Strength and Conditioning Association certified personal trainer. He also has certifications in kettlebells, Olympic Weightlifting, Nutrition, and soon Hybrid Athlete (a certification that enhances his programming skills for crossfit, strongman, powerlifting, running, etc). Chad has coached MMA fighters, tennis professionals, powerlifters, and competitive strongmen and strongwomen. At strongman nationals this year, one of his clients took home 2nd place in her weight class, and finished in the top 10 overall.

Here is our trainer’s review of his time with Chad:

“I met up with Chad for a one-on-one training session. He started out by explaining the breakdown of the workout I could look forward to, as we were going for a strongman experience. Warm up with proper breathing and general movement patterns, work complex lifts with big muscle groups, try some “heavy weight cardio” as he called it, and then a little surprise at the end.

The warm up was pretty standard. After cueing me on my breathing, which would come in handy later, we did some light movements like barbell complexes to get the blood flowing and loosen the muscles to be used. Our first lift was one of my favorites, the deadlift. We did several sets and around the 4th set, I felt fatigue set in and had trouble getting the weight up. I got to see Chad’s coaching style here. He has a very effective, calm yet stern methodology. Chad knows you can, and will get you to do it by convincing you that you can. He repeated his cues, making sure I kept my form in the hands, legs, back, and head, as well as making sure my breathing stayed efficient. And suddenly I could continue…

We followed the deadlift up with a log clean and press. This was an exercise I had never done. After Chad gave me a demonstration of how to do it, it was my turn. After one attempt, chad stopped me to fix my form. His technical knowledge of small details was very impressive. It was a bumpy and awkward road learning this new maneuver. But by the end I was able to lift more weight on the press part than I had ever lifted on an overhead press by itself, all thanks to Chad picking apart my form.

Next up was the heavy weight cardio. Normally, when people think of cardio, they think of a moving at a steady pace over a long distance -- this was anything but. I never moved weights for more than 30 feet at a time. But over that 30 feet I was carrying heavy weights in both hands, what the strongmen call a farmer’s carry. After the 30 feet, I put the handles down and picked up a sandbag. I carried that back to my starting point, where a keg was waiting for me. I then picked that up and carried it back to the other side of the room... After a few rounds of this, I was shot. But thanks to the coaching style I described earlier, he was able to coax me into two more rounds.

Needless to say, I was exhausted, so whatever the surprise he had for me, I was not looking forward to. The surprise was grip strength training. I had never thought of working on my grip, but it sounded like fun and it didn’t require me to do any more running from one end of the room to the other. We loaded some plates onto a pin and attached different implements to the top. These included items called the “Rolling Thunder,” a “grenade,” and a disc the “hub.” After picking these up repeatedly, and now shaking from the aches in my hands, he demonstrated his superior grip strength by tearing an entire deck of cards in half and then bending a 6 inch nail with a spike still on one end.

My workout with Chad Canter of PowerNYC Training was one of the hardest I have ever had. The mix of heavy weights and cardio taxed my body like nothing else I had done before. Yet his incredible amount of knowledge and never-say-never coaching style pushed me to work harder than I had previously thought possible. I can honestly say, in my opinion, Chad is not only one of the best strongman coaches in New York, he is one of the best trainers in general.

Where Does Your Fat Go When You Lose Weight? 07/08/2015

Its not where you think!

Where Does Your Fat Go When You Lose Weight? We talk a lot about dieting and burning off fat, but we actually have a lot of misconceptions about weight loss. Some people think fat is converted into energy or heat—a violation of the law of conservation of mass—while others think that the fat is somehow excreted or even converted to muscle. I wa…

This week we sent one of our CTG trainers to team up with Stef Gordon of Stef Gordon Fit for a private pilates session. Stef is a personal trainer and pilates instructor operating out of Cynergy Physical Therapy at 315 Madison Ave, suite 1201. She is recognized as a STOTT PILATES ® advanced certified instructor, a certifying instructor-trainer with Pilates Academy International, and certified as a personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

I have never done pilates, and never really thought it was something I would try, so I was a bit apprehensive going into it. When I walked into the studio, Stef was standing at the door to welcome me. Immediately, her infectious smile and warm welcome settled my nerves. After a brief tour of the space, we got down to work on the reformer. This apparatus did a great job of pointing out my lack of coordination and body awareness. Stef continually had to adjust my positioning and posture throughout the different exercises.

When we got to the core strengthening piece of the session, I began to really feel the burn. I barely made it through this portion of the workout, but Stef was there giving me notes, correcting my posture, and most importantly, motivating me to continue. Her strong motivation skills and coaching ability were clearly on display during this time. Although I felt uncomfortable with the movements, I knew I was in good hands. I should also mention that my abs were very sore over the next couple of days!

Although I didn’t feel the muscular expenditure I get from a standard strength training workout in a gym, the stability, mobility, and coordination that was trained during the session was far greater than that of a gym workout. The benefits of a pilates session with Stef Gordon Fit can definitely be enjoyed for a vast array of populations. From older people looking for low impact workouts to those looking to help rehab injuries. From those looking for a great ab workout, to athletes looking to better their neuromuscular control for that competitive advantage. Stef Gordon Fit will strengthen your core, improve flexibility and mobility, and improve coordination and motor skills.

Stef Gordon’s professionalism, knowledge, and coaching abilities make her an ideal trainer and pilates instructor. We highly recommend Stef Gordon Fitness, and couldn’t be more excited to be working with her.
