3rd part of Miracles now and then by Joel Thomas

Some miracles we pray for and we know if they happen we think it will promote his kingdom.
I am tempted to doubt when God does not show up for me.

Herod had 3 of his sons killed because they were going against him
He selected one of his son, Harod Antropus to replace him.

This is the mess up family that was leading where Jesus was being the minister.

John the Baptiste, his cousin was preaching the arrival of Jesus in the desert.

John found out about Herod's family and he decided to confront the family.

That was against Jewish law. Mark 6:17

Herod, himself ordered for John to be arrested after he said you can't have your brother's wife.
Herod was afraid of John because he knew he was a man of God..

John the Baptiste heard about what Jesus was doing and he sent to ask him what is going on are you the one to come?

It appeared that everybody else was getting a miracle but he was not.

When things don't go right in my life or I see an unjust circumstances, they tend to test my faith.

Why would a good God allow innocent children to be abused?
Where is God?

Pain tends to shrink our worldview to a small circumference around us.
Why Jesus did not show up for John?

Go back and tell John what is going on. Matt 11:5
In John's head was why are you doing all these miracles and I'm rotten in jail, about to be killed?

Jesus wanted John to look outside his circumstances and see what is going on outside of where he is and that people were being saved.

Matt 11:11.
Jesus described John as one of the greatest human being during his time.

But John was disturbed that Jesus did not come up for him.

Look back- Look out- Look up to understand God's will.

Jesus suggested to John to Look back- Look out and Look up.

Our hope is not in this world. Our greatest hope is meeting our God in heaven.
Jesus did nothing for the greatest man he knew.
Jesus did not do anything for himself either because the death of Jesus soon came, since it was needed for our salvation.

When you feel you have not received the miracle you were waiting for, Jesus wants to to look back of what he has done, look out to what he is doing and look up to him and let him gives you the courage to understand that your current situations don't reflect how he feels about you.

Our greatest hope in Jesus is to meet him in the new world.
Jesus is never absent even when we don't get our miracles the way we expect them.

2nd part of the series: Miracles Then and Now
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OelaSRTbaJQ

A miracle is something impossible.
A miracle is a suspension or reversal of the laws of nature.
Miracles are possible through our God as the master of the universe.
All christians must believe in these two miracles to be a christian.
First you must believe : the miracle of the universe. God created the world.
Second: the resurrection of Jesus.
If miracles are possible, how do I get one?
What is the formula, what is the code, the password to miracles.
When you follow Jesus through the gospels, one thing is clear, there is no formula.

There is no measure of faith that forces God's hands.
Miracles are at God's discretion to further God's purposes.

The christians went in the street after Jesus' resurrection and said God sent his son and you crucified him but we have good news for you.
He rose from the dead. our brother, Stephen who was stoned did not get a miracle. Act 11:19

Some of the other christians ran for their lives but they did not abandon the faith. Acts 11:20.
Some of them went to Antioch which was in Greece and people started to accept God.
God's glorious inconsistencies.
How come Stephen's life was not saved?

The lord's hands were with the christians who went to Antioch and they did not get hurt even though they went to foreigners who did not know anything about Jesus.

Herod (agrippa) had James, the brother of John, put to death. John the brother of James was the only disciple who was not a martyr.

Acts 12:3
Herod decided to go after Peter who was the main leader of christianity at the time.
Act 12:4. He arrested him and had him in prison.
Herod wanted to bring him on trial right after passover.

Acts 12:5. The church was praying to God for a miracle for Peter. The night before he was about to be killed by Herod.
An angel appeared and and told him "let's go"
Peter said he thought he was dreaming.
Next thing he saw himself standing outside of the prison. Stephen is stoned, James is beheaded and Peter is free.
This is the inconsistency in God's miracles. Acts 12:13

Acts 12:15 Even Though they were praying for the miracles, they said you are out of mind.
God has a purpose for inconsistencies.
When Peter walked in, they were astonished. Acts 12:14.

Less than a year later, Herod died. John Mark went out with Peter and wrote Mark
Later, as Peter continued to preach the gospel, he was arrested and this time he was crucified.
Miracles are at God's discretion to accomplish God's purposes.

We are free to ask God for anything, but God is the only one who will decide on the response. There is no need to bargain with God.
Let go and let God.

Luke 22:42. Jesus said: Father if you are willing, take this cup away from me, not my will but thy will be done
The people God used to change the world got a no in their prayer at some point in time.
The people whose faith inspires you are not the ones who get the miracles that happen to them.
Miracles are God's discretion to accomplish God's purposes.

As christians, our goal should be based on God's purpose even when we don't get miracles and the right responses to our prayers.

Series: Miracles then and now

Following Jesus will make you better and better at life.

What makes a miracle a miracle?

A divine intervention.
Reversal of the laws of nature

Do you have to believe in miracle to be a christian?
You only need to believe two miracles to be a christian.

1st miracle: The birth of the universe is a miracle.

The law of nature became real when the universe was created.

It was a supernatural event.
Everything that has a beginning has a cause.

Many people know it was done by God.
A number of people don't know what causes it.

Even if the universe was created by itself, it would still be a miracle.
It would be beyond a natural event.

God had no beginning, so there is no cause.

The point of Genesis account explains that God created the heavens and the earth.

Classical apologetic method:

God exists: Miracles are possible

The gospels are reliable accounts of actual events.

2nd miracle: Jesus rose from the dead
If he rose from the dead then he is whom he said he is.

If Jesus said whom he said to be so we can trust what Jesus said about the Hebrew scripture.

The Hebrew scriptures talked about the coming of Jesus, the old testament.

The miracle of the universe is the foundation of our belief.
The miracle of the resurrection is the foundation of christianity.

BE RICH
Jesus said to his disciples when they asked to feed the people. Jesus said "You gave them something to eat".Matt 14:16 NIV
GIVE-SERVE-LOVE
2nd branch of the BE RICH campaign: Serve.
1 Timothy 6-17-18If you have extra, serve others.

In the past being poor was a punishment by the gods.
Jesus came and changed that philosophy.

While you were a sinner and could not do anything for God,
God sent his son to die for you, the greatest gift.
So, you must do the same to those who can't give you back.

We have associated with organizations that are making a difference in people's lives.
What would make a difference for you?
What would make a difference in the lives of the people you are helping?

For most of us we can give our money rather than our time. Giving our money is less costly than giving our time.
Money is different from Life.
Time=Life.
God owns everything, we only manage things.
Money managers should feel responsible, not guilty for being blessed.
IF you are in charge of fixing the southern border wouldn't it be fixed by now?
Anytime we can't fix or control, we tend to become judgmental as humans but we are Jesus' followers, we should be working differently and thinking differently.

Over 20,000 of folks in our church have gone on missions.
We come back more burdens and more grateful.
We have learned to love with our time and also our money.

Serving people with different lived experiences is one of the primary things that God uses to expand our views of the christian life.

These experiences threaten our arrogance and ignorance.

We should not be threatened by these things, as christians.

We are ambassadors of a king.
So we have to be compassionate always.

When you engage in people 's lives, reading the Bible becomes even more real.
Jesus, our king did not just come to visit us, he became one of us for 30 years, in a small village.

We are invited to do the same.
The Hebrew word for MERCY assumes proximity.

To show mercy, you have to touch them and be close to them.

Do you remember the parable of the Samaritan?
Which of these 3 do you think was a neighbor to the man? Luke 10;37

The one who had mercy. The one who got close, who stopped and actually touched him.
I want to encourage each one of you to go and do likewise.
Give that person something to eat.
You will miss it if you dismiss it. We are too busy to do these things.
Would you be willing to serve?
Doing for others does something for you and in you.
Would you be willing to be open to make time to serve?
We have local and abroad projects

God loves you far too much to leave you where you are
Potential of God's transformation in our lives.

Everybody wants to thrive.
When we think about thriving we think about influence, wealth.

There is more to life than having a lot of money.
A great number of folks with influence are not happy.

We tend to look for external things around us to make us happy.

True Happiness comes from inside.

Matthew 13:3-5
He said, "Listen, (don't miss this).
A farmer went out and planted some seeds.
Seeds fall in many different soils.
The seeds that fall in good soils did very well.

Anyone with ears, listen. He wanted to emphasize his point.

Matt 13:10. The disciples came and said why do you use parables all the time to speak to people and to us.

verse 11: He said some folks are permitted to understand the kingdom of God, others are not.

My words are for a special group of people who are really searching to find me.
My understanding is for those who are willing to listen to my words.

If you really seek to find God, you will find the truth.

Some folks hear but don't listen. They look but they don't see.

Sometimes we listen to God's message for someone else.
We often say "I know someone else who needs this."

Matt 13:19. The seeds that fell in the footpath are like those who listen but don't hear. the evil one comes and snatches it from them.

The seed on the rocky soil since they did not have deep roots when trouble comes they fall away.

The third one are seeds that fell into thorns, which are worries in our lives, worries about wealth rather than trusting in the Lord.
What you feed grows.

They are things in our lives that need to die so we can let God's presence grow.

The fourth group of see fall into good soil and this seed grows and produce lots of fruits.

The problem is not the seed in our lives.
The problem is not the sewer.
The problem is that we don't have ears to hear.

Will you take responsibility to change the position and the condition and the pasture of your heart to accept the truth?
Is your heart hard?

Is your heart shallow?

Are they other thing that are interfering to receive the word of God?
Is the soil rich to receive God's words and flourish?

God wants you to flourish.

2nd part of the series: The Power of a Made up story by Joel Thomas

The power of Jesus's parables.

Haggadah: Stories made with a point

Matt 18: 21
Then Peter asked how often should I forgive someone who sins against me?
70 times 7= Infinite time.

In response to Peter's question Jesus started with a parable.
Matt 18:22-26

Peter wanted to know how good he had to be.
How graceful he had to be?

Our capacity to forgive flows from what we've been forgiven.

Jesus wants us to understand then and now.

Will you forgive like you have been forgiven?

It is not that simple to forgive.
To forgive, you have absorbed the pain they caused you.
This is why it is so hard to forgive.
The ability to cancel the debt takes a lot from us.

How did that affect you?
Ask God to give you the capacity to absorb it.

When you hold back forgiveness it leads to bitterness.

Which causes us to enslave ourselves.
Forgiveness is not for the person who hurts you but it is mainly for yourself. Gal 5:1

It is for freedom that God has set us free.

Col 3:13: Make allowance for each other's faults.
Forgive anyone who offends because God forgave you.

Canceling a debt does not mean you let yourself be abused over and over.

Holding back forgiveness is like drinking poison hoping the other person will die.

Choosing not to forgive keeps you from becoming free.

Be free from the prison of bitterness.

Without the grace of Jesus, there are some hurts that can't be forgiven.
We need the freedom from Jesus to be able to forgive others.

Jesus says I will supply you with everything you need to be able to forgive others to the fullest.

Matt 18:31
Some of the people saw what happened and they reported it to the king.
The king sent the man to prison after hearing this.

All my life you have been faithful
New series: Part 1: The power of a made up story: message by Joel Thomas

A third of the gospels Matthew Mark, Luke and John were made up stories.
Jesus used parables to share his messages.
Jesus used parables to cause disruption.

Three basic elements:
1.Share Ordinary subject matter: for example agriculture

2.Create A twist or shock

3.Create Unresolved tension.
His disciples will often say what do you mean by that?

Luke 15:1: Tax collectors came to hear Jesus.
That made the Pharisees and teachers upset.
A story: Luke 15:3-4If you lose a sheep, would you not leave and go find the missing one?

When he finds it, would he not throw a party to celebrate?
The same happens in heaven when one lost sinner repents and is saved and starts following Jesus.

When you lose something of great value, it is worth even more.

To illustrate the point further. Luke 15: 11-30: he shared the story of the two sons: the prodigal son. God loves us no matter what.

He is filled with love and compassion.
The father ran to his son and hugged his son.
The older brother became angry.
The love of God extends so far beyond.
Celebrate with those who have been found.

Service at Buckhead Church on September 8th at 11am:

Let's first take the time to pray for the families that were affected by the latest school shooting in Georgia.
Let not just pray but find ways to support.

"Be rich" starts today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-Yr33cpQZA

We have to choose to make the world a better place.

Are doers of those who follow what Jesus asks us to do.
Jesus followers practice regularly what Jesus commands them to do.

Jesus introduces a brand new way of life.
When we are in line with the way Jesus asks us to live, we function well.
Matthew 28:22. Believing is one thing, Jesus wants us to obey and do.
We are ambassadors of King Jesus.

We want to leave Jesus ' mark through us on the world.
Everyone needs to know the church is here and active.

Luke 16:16. We envision a world where things will change. The king has brought the kingdom with him and is inviting everyone to the kingdom.

I want you to love others as I have loved you.
Our mission is to inspire people to follow Jesus by engaging them in the church lifestyle. To do God's work.

Live in such a way where people will want to be like you.

God wants to transform me personally, culturally and globally.

Things get better
People get better
Families get better
Communities get better
Nations get better.

Others first then me second.

Self control is the best control.
Doing what you ought to even when it costs you is what God's mission is for us.
To do unto others as our King has done unto and for us.

We are making history together.
Every year around this time, we come together to give a push to the world.

It is our annual generosity campaign.

We call it "BE RICH".

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy and said when you are with the christians, I want you to tell them
"Command those who have extra to support others, who are rich in the present world, to do good, to be rich in good deeds and to be generous." Do good for those who can't return the favor and those who won't return the favor.
1 Timothy 6:17

It is not enough to believe.
It is a present active infinitive. It is ongoing.
BE RICH is to : GIVE SERVE LOVE
Instead of replicating what fabulous non profit organizations were doing, we have decided to partner with them.
We ask them what would make the biggest difference for them?

What would help you make a big difference?

Give us your wish list.

Devotion to God is best demonstrated through the way we treat other people.

Part 3 of The series "The responsibles" by Andy Stanley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz4w3vbuDR8

If I go on like this, I know where it leads.God bless those stuck taking care of me.
100% of people with DUI stay it won't happen to them.
Their irresponsibility becomes somebody else's responsibility.
"I got this".
Who do they turn for help when they realize that they did not get it?
Who will you expect to rescue you when your irresponsibility catches up with you?

Whose future does your current irresponsible behavior potentially jeopardize?

My decision impacts everyone around me.
The entire series is an invitation to join a group of superheroes.

They are taking responsibility for their lives.
A responsible person is a person who cleans up what he or she messed up.
Am I taking full responsibility for my life?In your past and your future.
If you are a Jesus' follower that becomes even more serious.
Galatians 6:2. Carry each other's burdens.
Don't become an unnecessary burden for someone else.
This will fulfill the law of Christ. Love one another like Jesus loves us.Treat other people the way I have treated you.
Gal 6:5. Carry your own load.
Forgiveness does not release it from the responsibility of our past.
Repentance is to own what we need to own. Do what is best for others.
Your future is coming for you!
Refusing to plan and take responsibility for your future is planning to become a burden for someone else.

Don't plan to be a burden. Plan to be a blessing.
Direction not intention determines your destination.
Physically, emotionally, relationally and spiritually.

Proverbs 27:12 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

I'm just trusting God. No, you are not. You are just a fool.
Trust that God will not suspend the law of the harvest on your behalf.
Galatians 6:7. Do not be deceived.God can't be mocked.

A principle is different from a law.
You can break a law but not a principle.
A man reaps what he sows.
You reap what you sow later and greater.
Fairness ended in the garden of Eden.

Compare the size of the seed and see the result of when it grows. Way bigger.
Later, greater cause and effect.
God cares about the next generation as much as he cares about you.
You can commit a 5 minutes crime and go to jail for 50 years.
I wish I heard this when I was younger, the 50 and older saying.

I wish I used this and applied it when I was younger.
Small deposits over time make all the difference.
Are you ready to stop making excuses?
Are you ready to take responsibility for your life for the future generation?
If you are not ready to take responsibility, tell the people you will expect them to take care of you and your mistakes.

Just in case, I mess up, I will be counting on you.
Tell them ahead of time. That would be a responsible move.
These are the kind of things we do when we decide to follow Jesus.
Irresponsibility is a sin.
Whatever that hurts you or someone else is a sin.

If it creates a burden for somebody else, it is a sin.

Plan to be a burden carrier not a person who leaves burdens for others.
Create a plan to be a blessing. Write down.
