Good afternoon Mr. Harvey. My name is Michael “Zaki” Smith I’m a 47yr old ex felon. I’ve been out of prison for 14yrs now. I was release from federal prison in 2004. Sense my release I have been working with impacting the lives of young people. I’ve worked with board of Education in NY with students that have experienced homelessness, I’ve worked in the juvenile detention center as barber/mentor countless community engagements, speaking in high schools, becoming a program director for a community based nonprofit organization, to eventually working with a nonprofit organization called The Future Project. I was hired with The Future Project as a Dream Director working in a high school Newark Nj. I have always been fourth-right with my past. My organization as well as my principal have new of my criminal history. It actually added to my ability to engage and impact young people in a different way. I been working in East Side High School in Newark Nj for 4yrs without any issue.
In the spirit of being in compliant with or organizations MOU I was instructed to be finger printed. I did without any worry. I received a letter in the mail 2 weeks later telling me I can no longer work in any school in the state of Nj because of my criminal history. I don’t have crimes against children, I don’t have r**e or murder on my record. I have not had any interaction with law enforcement sense 2002. I’ve done everything in my power to rehabilitate myself and have made a commitments serve young people for the rest of my life. Would like to come on your show to tell my story. This is about the massage that’s being sent to young people about changing their love and the 70 million formerly incarcerated men and woman in this country who are suffering in silence because they are made to believe that they have no voice because of their past.
