There are many benefits to leading an active lifestyle. From preventing illness and injury to boosting one's mental wellbeing. 🏃

We caught up with some of the Chelsea Pensioners to find out more about what they're doing to stay active this month, including Bowls Club members Mike and Ron.

💬 "I’ve always been involved in sport. I used to be a cricket umpire for 20 years or so. I thought I would give Bowls a go when I got here and I love it; it’s a fantastic sport. It’s very sociable. You learn something new too!" - Mike

💬 "I used to play with my wife as it was something we could both participate in. So, the first thing I asked when I came here was if there was a Bowls Club. Within a week of being here, I was playing Bowls. I'll be 90 this year and it's something you can still do in your older age. The social life is very important too." - Ron

Weight Management
Both eating patterns and physical activity routines play a critical role in weight management. You gain weight when you consume more calories through eating and drinking than the amount of calories you burn, including those burned during physical activity.

To maintain your weight: Work your way up to 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity, which could include dancing or yard work. You could achieve the goal of 150 minutes a week with 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

People vary greatly in how much physical activity they need for weight management. You may need to be more active than others to reach or maintain a healthy weight.

To lose weight and keep it off: You will need a high amount of physical activity unless you also adjust your eating patterns and reduce the amount of calories you’re eating and drinking. Getting to and staying at a healthy weight requires both regular physical activity and healthy eating.

A recent study by the American Association for the Child’s Right to Play found that 80 percent of elementary schools have eliminated recess in an effort to give children more time to study academics to pass tests. One out of every five calories your child consumes comes from liquid. It is recommended that liquids with calories (fruit juice, soda, etc.) should provide no more than 10 percent of daily calories for preschool children.
