In honor of Black History Month, I’d like to spread some knowledge on a pioneer and trailblazer that opened so many doors for the Black owned makeup giants that we have today. Eunice Walker, founder of

Born in 1916 in Selma, Alabama, Eunice Walker was highly educated, earning a degree in sociology and a Master’s in Social Work. In 1941, she married John H. Johnson, and together they founded Johnson Publishing Company (JPC) which is responsible for the Ebony and Jet magazines, a nostalgic publication found in many Black homes.

In 1958, Eunice created the Ebony Fashion Fair, a traveling haute couture runway show. This was a radical act at the time because for many Black women in segregated or underserved areas, Fashion Fair was their first exposure to high-fashion garments modeled by women who looked like them.

The creation of Fashion Fair Cosmetics was born out of necessity! During the Fashion Fair tours, Eunice noticed her models had to mix their own foundations using household products or stage makeup because commercial brands didn’t make shades dark enough for their skin.

When she approached established cosmetic giants (like Revlon and Estée Lauder) to create a line for Black women, they refused, claiming the market was too small.

In 1973, she launched Fashion Fair Cosmetics. It was the first “prestige” makeup line available in high-end department stores (like Marshall Field’s and Macy’s) specifically formulated for women of color.

Eunice Johnson passed away in 2010, but her impact is seen in every “inclusive” makeup launch today. She proved that Black beauty was not only culturally significant but also commercially powerful. Long before the “Fenty Effect,” there was the “Fashion Fair Standard.”

Eunice Johnson was a visionary who didn’t just participate in the beauty industry—she forced it to acknowledge a demographic it had historically ignored. As the matriarch of a media empire, she used her platform to redefine global standards of Black elegance

STORY TIME!… Allow me to introduce you to 17 year old Sasha. Outspoken, well spoken, talented, and “different” from her peers. Often times ridiculed and judged that she thought she was “better” than others.

She was bullied for speaking like a “white girl”, being overweight and for wearing glasses. She was underestimated, told she was dyslexic and that she wasn’t smart enough to get into the college of her choice.

In this picture, she took home the crown as the very first Miss Black American Princess . Murmurs in the audience echoed with doubt because she was going up against a bunch of other experienced and much slimmer pageant young ladies.

This is just part of my story. (Truly book worthy) but more so a testament that when you are destined for greatness, absolutely no one can take that away from you. 17 year old me remained confident because God kept telling her that she was more than what other saw in her.

I share this because maybe it’ll be a reminder to someone else about their own greatness. A reminder that you are not what others say you are. A reminder to be a timeless classic in a room full of trends.
