Before tiled bathrooms and running water, bathing for Marie Antoinette at Versailles happened in private chambers tucked behind the noise of court life 🛁
In 1784, Marie Antoinette commissioned a secluded suite of rooms on the ground floor of the palace, including a marble bath chamber reserved for washing, rest, and a rare kind of solitude. Bathing in 18th century France was slow work. Copper tubs were carried in and filled by hand. Water was heated room by room. Towels, oils, perfumes, and fresh linen turned the process into ritual rather than routine.
Long before wellness became an industry, people were already searching for small ways to disappear from the world for a while. Showing that the bathroom truly might be the last sane place on earth 🤍
