Alhena Katsof is a super fu***ng LOVELY client/friend. Alhena is a writer an organizer who works in close conversation with artists. Her practicing encompasses visual art performance, art creative non-fiction writing, exhibition, making and unorthodox modes of trans disciplinary scholarship. I’m honestly so excited for this, specifically because I cannot stop thinking about the music at the center of it. Anh Vo spent the last year studying with renowned Ca Trù musicians Vũ Thuy Linh and Pham Dình Hoăng, this nearly extinct northern Vietnamese chamber music tradition that was historically passed directly from Teacher to student. It’s steer, translate, hyper, poetic, rhythmically, intricate/all voice, drum, and loot in this incredibly restrained, but emotionally loaded interplay.

And of course, my favorite detail is that the communist government effectively bandit because of its associations with prostitution and o***m culture. Which, frankly makes me want to see it even more. A nearly lost musical form, tied to s*x workers, drugs, nightlife, poetry and decadence, surviving through oral tradition and apprenticeship, until now feels almost offensively glamorous to me. Even though when I was treating s*x for drugs, it was co***ne, not o***m, but hey, who’s counting?

What really got me though, was learning that Valleau grew up hearing a family story is about their great grandmother who was Ca Trù singer on Khâm Thiên street in Hanoi – an area wants notorious for singing houses, o***m, dens, and all the blurry entanglements between art, s*x work, money, and survival that I personally find far more interesting than “respectable culture“. The great grandmother was eventually brought out of the singing house by Vose great grandfather to become his second wife, which honestly sounds less like arts administration, and more like the plot of the kind of movie I would aggressively recommend everyone I know.

It sounds scholarly, decadent, emotionally, risky, and slightly dangerous – basically; ideal conditions.

Never a dull moment when Michelle Handelman is in the room! So many great conversations, gossip, secrets, and all the things that happen between ladies and a sulking room. # # #.

took me to see these amazing “cross color” photographs from the series of the same name. These works were made in the late 1980s—early 1990s at the apex of the culture in NYC. Artist was clearly at the forefront in conversations around race and gender in what would become our present q***r politics. Went to see Andra Ursuța: Retina Turner closing today. Had the pleasure of hanging out with her regularly but not often in the mid-late aughts. Aside from being a mind bending sculptor, she’s a super fun lady and has STYLE for miles. Next pic is the one time I got to manage her hair.

OMFG! I got to meet and chat with icon, muse, all around it-girl for FU***NG DECADES .hansen who is a multi disciplinary artist. My personal favorite is her phenomenal performances. She’s collaborated with EVERY luminary from Vaginal Davis and to Edie Sedgwick a the VU. She was a dancer in one of my fav/the best movie ever and I’m STILL SO STARSTRUCK a week later. I wish I could say I do her hair—I don’t—but I’m on a mission 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
