This autoimmune disease can cause hair loss in circular, coin-sized patches on the scalp, face, and even other parts of the body.

Alopecia Areata is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles, leading to hair loss. While it can affect people of all ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds, research shows that more than 80% of individuals develop symptoms before age 40. Interestingly, about 700,000 people in the U.S. currently have some form of this condition.

Scientists are still working to understand why the immune system targets healthy hair follicles. They know it’s a polygenic disease, linked to multiple genetic factors, but not everyone with the genes develops it.
