The Science and Art of Haircare

05/05/2020

After careful consideration I have decided not to reopen Hair Theory.

This decision was extremely difficult. As you may know several years ago I developed sensitivities to nearly all common chemicals used in salons. This was the main reason I moved to a suite and switched to natural based products so I could continue to do hair. Unfortunately the benefits of working in a salon no longer outweigh the risks for me.

The salon environment moving forward is going to be very different, but other stylists in the area are ready to handle it. If you are interested I will get you in touch with a friend who I know will take good care of you and your hair.

It has been an absolute honor to be your hairstylist behind the chair or just here. I hope you continue to stay healthy and happy.

"How do I make my hair grow thicker?"

If you're concerned with the density of your hair there are several factors. The density of your follicles is genetic, some people have more follicles than others. You cannot create more follicles but they can become damaged and stop producing hair.

One of the most common health problems we see affecting our hair is hormone changes or imbalances. Hormonal shifts can trigger "Telogen Effluvium" or sudden hair shedding when the hair follicle prematurely enters the telogen resting phase where no new hair growth occurs.

When we think of hormonal changes some main ones come to mind which can definitely change our hair but there are many ways hormones affect our hair. Hormones are regulatory chemicals produced by our bodies and there are hundrerds of them! Insulin is a hormone most people are familiar with that's produced by the pancreas to regulate blood glucose. Long term insulin problems, including pre-diabetes can cause hair loss or extsting hair to become weak.

The thyroid produces several hormones that regulate tons of bodily functions including how our bodies absorb nutrients and convert food into energy. An imbalance of these hormones can cause many physical symptoms including hair loss.

Vitamin D is a hormone that helps our bodies absorb and use calcium and magnesium. Our bodies make it in response to sunlight. Vitamin D also plays a role in stimulating hair follicles so vitamin D deficiency can slow hair growth, and has been linked to alopecia (the medical term for hair loss).

Cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal gland that regulates many bodily functions but it is primarily known as the "stress hormone." Prolonged cortisol imbalance can lead to many different problems because it interacts with most cells in the body and can trigger telogen effluvium along with miniaturization of the hair follicle producing smaller, weaker hair strands.

So, if you are concerned about hair loss go see your doctor about your hormone and vitamin levels. Once corrected, new hair growth can appear in 6 to 12 weeks.

One of the most common questions I get asked is "How do I make my hair grow?" which is a much more complex question than it seems. If the question is really "How do I make my hair grow longer?" There are some helpful tips but unfortunately it's mostly genetic.

Hair length is determined genetically by how long our hair stays in the anagen growth phase. This can last anywhere from 2-6 years which will yield hair thats typically between 1 and 3 feet long at the end of its complete growth phase. At the end of that phase, the hair stops growing and sheds naturally which is why you might notice shedding during shampooing or brushing. This is a normal part of the hair growth cycle.

After shedding, the follicle rests for a couple months before growing new hair again. Each hair on our head is in a different phase of this cycle at any given time. This is why we can lose several hundred hairs a day without going bald. The best thing we can do to encourage growth is ensure our hair is it's strongest and least prone to breakage and isn't prematurely triggered into the catagen shedding or telogen resting phase.

Cleanse your scalp thoroughly and regularly with a high quality shampoo from your hairdresser. Drugstore products can cause buildup and suffocate the follicle, they are junk food for your hair. Even if the short term results seem fine, the long term consequences can be serious. Professional shampoo doesn't just cleanse your hair and scalp, it nourishes your hair too! It's health food for your hair and prevents long term problems.

The next most important thing for hair growth is to care for your body. Eat nutritious foods, drink water, sleep well, and exercise. Your follicle MAKES your hair from the building blocks in your body so higher quality ingredients will create higher quality hair.

Distress shows up in the hair sooner than other symptoms in the body. Our bodies will divert energy and resources from hair growth to manage more important functions. If you are losing an excessive amount of hair or it's looking dull, lifeless, breaking easily, or the texture is changing, this could be a sign of a health problem.
