a daily self-portrait practice: one photo of yourself every day this month to honor who you are, how you look, and how you feel. no rules, no perfection, just your self.

Four years ago this month, I had major spinal surgery. Before that, I felt like I was living inside a crumbling body. Standing or walking meant pain so intense it swallowed everything else. My world kept getting smaller. I didn’t see my body as something to celebrate. I tolerated it, resented it, tried to push through it.

Then I was given a choice: surgery that could fix everything… or make everything worse. What followed was nearly a year of recovery — ten months of relearning how to walk, how to move, how to trust my body again. It was isolating and exhausting. It forced me into stillness, into facing the fear that maybe I’d never move freely again.

But in that stillness, something shifted. I began to notice the small victories: the first steps without help, the way muscles remembered how to carry me, the quiet resilience of healing. Slowly, my perspective changed. I stopped seeing my body as broken and started seeing it as worthy. Worthy of care, of gratitude, of love. That shift has shaped me ever since.

So now, every September, I make it a point to honor that. To practice radical self-care. To honor what this body has carried me through. To not take any of it for granted. Fittingly, September is also Self-Care Awareness Month, which feels like the universe agreeing with me.

This year, I’m celebrating with Self in September — a daily self-portrait practice. One photo every day. Not about perfection, just about showing up as I am. Honoring who I am, how I look, how I feel.

Our next fair will be on Saturday August 16th from 12-2:30 pm. We will have all of the usual awesome resources like lunch, groceries, clothing, health products, cleaning supplies, haircuts, bike repairs and some fun crafts and activities.

Our awesome community partners will be there to provide books, pet food and supplies, and much more!

There will also be lots of fun stuff for kids!
