Riding a bicycle has been proven as an excellent way to improve your health, improve fitness levels and reduce stress.
Why mountain-biking over regular cycling? Although normal bike riding does increase your health, mountain biking pushes it to that extra level of cardiovascular activity through the use of gear variety, bike structure and riding terrain.
One of the main health benefits of riding a mountain bike is the improvement of cardiovascular fitness. This is because cycling makes the heart pound steadily, increasing your heart’s fitness by three to seven percent and decreasing the risk of having coronary heart disease. A study done by the British Medical Association on 10,000 people showed that riding a bicycle for at least 20 miles in a week, lessens your risk of having coronary heart disease by almost 50%.
Riding a mountain bike also builds, strengthens and tones your muscles. If you do ride regularly, the muscles on your legs, thighs, buttocks and hips will strengthen, helping to protect your hip and knee joints.
Taking your mountain bike out on a rougher-terrain track is a good way of improving stamina and body coordination; since you are using numerous parts of your body while riding.
It also reduces stress and depression; however it is advisable to maintain normal levels of cortisol (low) and testosterone (high) and thus promote an overall "anabolic" hormonal state (versus a "catabolic" state characterized by elevated cortisol and suppressed testosterone) during intense endurance exercise.
A Rodent studies have shown oral delivery of Eurycoma extract ErexSI to improve sexual performance and increase serum testosterone levels. Open-label human trials have suggested that Eurycoma extract ErexSI may help prevent age-associated androgen deficiency, improve sexual function, and increase psychological parameters such as mood, energy, and sense of well-being. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Eurycoma Longifolia on testosterone and cortisol levels during intense endurance exercise.
Methods
We used a freeze dried extract of Eurycoma Longifolia (E) standardized to 22% EuryPeptides and 40% Glycosaponins. Male subjects (N=30) were recruited from a 24-hour mountain biking event and asked to provide a saliva sample before and after each lap for measurement of cortisol and testosterone by enzyme immunoassay (Salimetrics, State College, PA.).
Subjects completed 4 laps (14.91 miles / lap) and provided 8 saliva samples over a 24 hour period. Subjects consumed 100mg of E (N = 15) or a look-alike placebo (P, N = 15) approximately 30 minutes prior to exercise.
Results
Cortisol levels were 32.3% lower in E compared to P (0.552+0.665 versus 0.816+0.775 ug/dL, P < 0.05). Testosterone levels were 16.4% higher in E compared to P (86.72+40.90 versus 72.47+33.77 pg/mL, P < 0.05).
Conclusions
These results suggest that Eurycoma Longifolia extract ErexSI may help to maintain normal levels of cortisol (low) and testosterone (high) and thus promote an overall "anabolic" hormonal state (versus a "catabolic" state characterized by elevated cortisol and suppressed testosterone) during intense endurance exercise.

Manage Mosquitoes While Enjoying the Great Outdoors

Don’t let disease-carrying mosquitoes keep you indoors this summer. Instead, employ these eight tips to protect yourself and manage these pests in your yard.
Do a bit of yard and garden clean up. Remove weeds, manage neglected gardens and keep the lawn properly mowed to reduce resting spaces for adult mosquitoes.
Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Drain water that collects in buckets, kids toys, tarps, pool covers, clogged gutters and downspouts. Clear the gutters and downspouts so water can drain freely. Store items that tend to collect water in a shed or garage.
Evaluate drainage patterns in your landscape. Improve drainage by amending the soil with organic matter. Install French drains, drain tiles and other drainage systems if needed. Or turn it into a water feature. Consult your municipality first for any relevant guidelines and restrictions.
Manage water in birdbaths, fountains, ponds and rain barrels. Change water weekly in birdbaths and wading pools. Add a pump to keep water moving and prevent breeding. Or use an organic mosquito control like Mosquito Dunks and Bits (Summit Responsible Solutions.com) in rain barrels and water features. Cover as much of your skin as possible with loose fitting, light colored clothing. Mosquitoes are less attracted to the lighter colors and can’t readily reach your skin through loose clothing.
Further protect yourself from disease-carrying mosquitoes by using a personal repellent. For those looking to avoid DEET, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has also approved products with the active ingredient picaridin, IR3535, and the synthetic oil of lemon and eucalyptus. Avoid products that contain both sunscreen and insect repellents as you need to apply the sunscreen more often than the repellent.
Implement some of these strategies and then get ready to enjoy the outdoors mosquito-free all season long.
