Scientists have found something hidden beneath Earth’s tectonic plates... and surprise! It's more molten rock, spanning nearly half the planet.

For the first time, researchers have mapped a global layer of partially molten rock about 100 miles (160 km) beneath the surface, nestled in the asthenosphere — a ductile zone in the upper mantle that lies just below Earth’s tectonic plates. This soft, slow-moving region plays a crucial role in allowing the plates to slide and drift over geological time. While small pockets of melt had been detected before, this study — led by geophysicists at the University of Texas at Austin — reveals the full extent and structure of this molten layer, reshaping how we view Earth’s interior.

But the surprise wasn’t just that the melt was there — it’s that it doesn’t seem to matter much. Using seismic data collected from around the globe, researchers found that the presence of melt had little to no effect on the way rocks flow in the mantle. This defies long-held assumptions that melt would significantly lower viscosity and speed up tectonic movement. Instead, the study points to thermal convection — the slow churning of hot and cool rock — as the main driver of plate tectonics. The melt, it turns out, may be more of a thermochemical marker than a mechanical force.

To reach this conclusion, lead author Junlin Hua compiled seismic images from across the planet and noticed a consistent pattern of low-velocity zones — regions where seismic waves slow down, indicating the presence of melt. These zones were previously thought to be isolated anomalies, but Hua’s global analysis showed they were widespread, appearing anywhere the asthenosphere was hottest. When compared to models of tectonic motion, however, the molten layer showed no significant impact on plate speed or direction.
