Four years.

Four years since life split into a “before” and an “after.”

People often tell you that time heals. I don’t know that it does.

I think time teaches you how to carry what can never be fixed.

There are still moments that stop me in my tracks. Milestones I wish he were here for. Stories I wish I could tell him. Holidays that feel incomplete. New babies he never got to meet. Nephews he’ll never hold. A niece who only knows him through the stories we tell.

Some losses don’t get smaller.
We just grow around them.

The ache never really leaves, it simply learns to live alongside joy.

Because somehow, life keeps asking us to hold both.

To laugh while missing someone.
To celebrate while grieving.
To be deeply grateful… while still wishing with everything in us that one person was here.

The day Devin’s life changed forever was also the day I found out I was pregnant with Dak, after months of praying following a miscarriage.

I’ve thought about that so many times over the years.

One day held unimaginable heartbreak and unimaginable hope.

Life has a way of doing that.

Today, four years later, I choose gratitude.

Not because I don’t miss him.
Not because it hurts any less.

But because I was lucky enough to be his sister.

Lucky enough to grow up laughing with him.
Lucky enough to know his heart.
Lucky enough that my children will always know his name, his stories, and how deeply he was loved.

They may never get to make memories with their Uncle Devin here on earth…

But they will grow up knowing the kind of man he was.

Love doesn’t end when a heartbeat does.

It simply asks to be carried differently.

So today & this week, I’ll cry if I need to.
I’ll smile when the memories come.
I’ll tell my kids another story about their uncle.

And I’ll thank God that, for the years we had him, he was ours.
