Even after 13+ years behind the chair, my own hair still keeps me on my toes.
As I’m seeing more grays and exploring new ways to work with them, I’m once again reminded—bleach just isn’t for everyone. Including me.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:

Finer, more porous, or naturally drier hair tends to be more vulnerable to damage from bleach—even with bond builders like Olaplex, K18, or B3.

➤ Genetics play a big role.
Some hair types naturally have less internal protein (keratin) or elasticity, making them more prone to breakage and dryness when lightened—even with careful application.

➤ Lifestyle matters.
If you often wear your hair tightly pulled back with elastics, use heat regularly, swim, or simply don’t have time for consistent deep conditioning, bleached hair may not hold up well.

➤ It’s not just about how it looks—it’s about how it feels.
Some people love the smooth, soft texture of their natural hair and find that the coarseness or dryness that can come with bleaching just doesn’t feel good day to day.

➤ Maintenance is real.
Bleached hair often needs frequent toning to keep brassiness at bay, along with hydrating masks, heat protection, and regular trims. For some, that upkeep just doesn’t align with their lifestyle or preferences.

➤ Bond builders help, but they have limits.
They can support the hair during processing, but they don’t eliminate the risk of damage. Bleach always requires trade-offs and consistent care.
