The truth about opening a small business (or 2).

How do you make your dreams a reality? I’m not really sure what the secret sauce is, but I can tell you this:

1. It’s going to be really fu***ng hard and scary. No matter how much experience you think you have, nothing can prepare you for trials that will come up in the process. But it has to happen to make you strong enough to withstand storms that will come along!

2. Trials will happen. If you’re opening a second small business like I just did, NO it won’t be easier than opening the first. So much has happened that I could never have seen coming. From a million issues with the building, workers, design and buildout, to other salon owners harassing myself and some of my team, leaving fake reviews, etc, this has been the ultimate test.

3. All of the above? 10000% WORTH IT!! You literally HAVE to go through it to get to it. (Corny yes) But it’s like the universe tests you to see if you REALLY do want what you say you want. It’s the ultimate preparation for owning a business.

5. There will be moments when you think you couldn’t possibly handle anymore and doubt why you’re doing it. When those times come, remember what your mission is, and remember who you’re doing it for. (Make sure your mission statement is clear and defined).

6. Make sure that everyone on your team believes in your mission and exemplifies your core values. The people you hire will make or break your culture. Wait for the right people. They will come!

8. When you find those people, LOVE them and appreciate them daily. Never forget how lucky you are to have great people in your corner. They are just as important to your business as you are.

7. NEVER let yourself develop an ego. Confidence and gratitude over everything.

In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined that I would be surrounded by so many incredible people. At BOTH locations, the people who work there are the salt of the earth. Thank you all for helping make Theory a safe, kind and loving space, and for holding yourselves to a high standard for your clients. Thank you for supporting me and Theory. I love you all!

Hey, it’s me, the one who formerly only saw work, success and family as the important parts of life and forgot to have fun! THANK GOD that changed last year.

One of the best parts of 2021 and 2022 have been the friendships that I’ve made and the friendships that have deepened. One of my most cherished ones is the one with .jesstaylor . One day we’re going to show the world what we’re working on, but for now, we’re literally cheering each other on from afar. She’s an incredible salon owner, coach, leader and survivor! (And of course friend)

Her story truly is one that has the ability to change lives. She is proof that light can come out of the darkest moments. And if you have the chance to get to know her and her Fiance together, it’s literally the best bonus. Together, the light up any room.

Remember to make fun and friendships a priority. You will ALWAYS be glad you did!

Life isn’t black and white.
Parenting isn’t black and white.
Business isn’t back and white.

For me, I have a really hard time trusting that I’m supported in the grey areas. There isn’t one right way in life, in parenting or business. If you believe you have it all figured out, you’re wrong.

The grey areas are hard, but the reality is, that is literal life, AND, it’s the only place where you are challenged to grow.

Be weary of people who claim to know how you should live, how you should parent or how you should run your business. Because 99% of the time, they are wrong. They aren’t you. They haven’t lived your life.

Listen to many but take advice from few. And stay away from anyone who says their way is the only way.

Know that if you feel helpless and in pain in the grey areas like me, you are exactly in the place you need to be to grow. Even in chaos, you are supported and you aren’t alone.

She’s a 10 but trusts her hairstylist so she’s a 14 🤌💋
