I haven't had any issues with clients who want a trim be unwilling to pay my rate for a haircut!
However, when working in a chain salon, this was sometimes a heated debate.
Some terms I use when talking about length to be discarded:
- A healthy trim: a healthy trim means cutting off all damage. This will eliminate all breakage and split ends at their highest point. In the provided image, a 'healthy trim' would be cut from #1
- Minimal trim/preserving the length: a minimal trim/preserving the lengths means that we will take off as much damage as we can while trying to save what is not cut. Usually this is done when the client plans to use split end menders, protein treatments, or heavy masks. A minimal trim would be cut from #2-3
- Perimeter trim: a Perimeter trim means we are going to even out the hairline so it is even across the bottom length all the way around. This can be cut at any number, though when trying to just even out damage it will be cut from #3

REGARDLESS of amount of length to come off, a trim is still a haircut!
