Like many salons I am temporarily closed. Many of my clients are feeling the blues because they can't get their hair colored. If that is you, and you are interested in hair color kits. send me message me and I will tell you how to obtain one. We will get through this together.
In The Meantime
In these tough times for all of us, I started to think about a way to redirect my frustration with having to close our doors and focus on the things I can do to continue providing value to you, my most valued customers.
Because we can’t continue with our regular routines for a little while, I felt it was important to help you try to maintain your styles and hair until we’re able to return to the salon. Most of you saw your hairstylist on a regular basis, maybe even weekly or bi-monthly. You may have depended on your stylist to keep your hair colored, straightened, styled and, most of all, healthy. Not only has it been an important ritual for us to look good, it also made us feel good. While we're temporarily unable to continue with these appointments in order to protect the health of ourselves and our community, I hope to be able to share some tips and advice for not letting our current situation give us the blues.
Tip #1: Shampooing & Conditioning
First, if you do get your hair done every one to two weeks and are used to having your hair shampooed, you might not be in the habit of shampooing yourself. But please do. You should shampoo and condition with a good quality shampoo once you notice build up and oil around your roots. If your scalp and hair does not build up with oil or you don’t have a dry scalp, you might be able to stretch the time out another week. In general, at least every two weeks is recommended. As an alternative to shampooing, you can use an antiseptic on your scalp with a cotton swab but don’t drench it if your hair is straight because it may cause your hair to revert. This not only helps with itching, but it also cleans the scalp. You can find this antiseptic like Laran’s Sensation, which I have on my website, or Sea Breeze, which can be purchased at any drug store. You may also order this online.
If you can’t take it anymore and must shampoo your hair, you should. Many of my clients wear Brazilian Blow Outs and may have concerns over their Brazilian Blow Out being compromised. If you shampoo your hair, it is important to use a sulfate free shampoo. These also can be purchased at drug stores and online. Brazilian Blow Out does carry shampoos and conditioners that would be great to use during this time off from the salon. If your budget is tight and you are looking for a less expensive sulfate free shampoo, Mixed Chicks has one. (It's what I use on my hair.) It’s about half the cost of the Brazilian Blow out brand. Laran, which I have available, carries one as well.
Tip #2: Hair Color
The next subject I want to talk about is hair color, yikes! Many of my clients wear hair color. If it’s not to cover up grey, it’s because they prefer the color they wear to their natural color. In any case this is what concerns me the most. Many of you will be tempted to do your own color or get depressed as you see the gray hairs start to resurface. I wouldn’t blame you for feeling this way as I can totally relate, but please don’t do your own color or have your husband do it or anyone else that you are quarantined with. As much as these store-bought brands say, non-permanent, non-ammonia, temporary dyes, etc, these types of colors are going to make it harder to match your existing color and correct once we get back on track doing your salon color. My suggestion is to get a color wand, which is really temporary. It lasts from shampoo to shampoo and is easily removed from the hair. Many of you already use these and understand how they work.
Tip #3: Straight Styling
I had to add this picture above for a little humor. Okay, if you wear a style that needs to be straightened by a blow dryer and flat iron, you can try to do this yourself by using a warm to hot blow dryer with a comb attachment. Then follow with a flat iron, but make sure you don't use a setting higher than 420 degrees! Take small sections, starting in the back as you work your way to the front, much like I do when straightening your hair. It may not look like it was professionally done, but it will get you through until we can get you back in my chair. If you have a light oil, you can use it and wrap your hair immediately, which will help to smooth it out more.
Tip #4: Natural Styling
If you wear your hair natural, you probably have this down already, but I don’t want to leave you out. Make sure to continue to moisturize your hair, not by using a lot of oils because typically they sit on top of the hair not penetrating through the hair shaft, which often blocks natural oils and moisturizer from penetrating. Make sure to do your hair in the early part of the day so that you allow it to dry before going to bed. Shampoo and condition your hair, and be sure to use a good leave-in conditioner throughout the hair. Comb it through with a detangling brush or wide tooth comb, while your hair is very wet. After combing the leave-in conditioner in, use Laran’s styling foam or Laran’s Body Enhancer. The foam is used for a stronger hold, and the Body Enhancer gives more body and movement while still controlling the curls. Apply the product section by section to your hair to avoid overusing the product and your hair drying out before you reach the top. You can also do a two strand twist, finger coils, or roller sets if you have the tools for this. You may use a serum or spray oil with your coils. This is to keep frizz at a minimum and smooth the texture.
If you don’t want to attempt any of these suggestions and really can’t see yourself making the effort, no problem. Just keep your hair clean, by shampooing, or using antiseptic, and conditioning, and pull it back in a bun or knot.
For those of you that are wearing protective styles like braids, crochets, weaves, etc. You can also apply the same measures for cleaning your scalp listed above. Also, if it is time to take your protective style out I would suggest doing so. Have someone you trust who is in the same household as you carefully remove it, detangle it, shampoo and condition it.
Many of the suggested products are available to purchase on my website. Click here to shop! I will be able to ship them usually the same day you order, which should just take a day or two for you to receive. Please email me if you have questions.
I hope this is helpful. I can’t wait to hear and see everyone soon.
Stay safe,
