Freshly Showered 🧼💦

Because some thoughts should probably stay in the shower, but some deserve to be shared once you’re out.

Today’s observation:

I may make skincare for a living…

But mostly it just feels like I’m moving boxes.

Stay clean, amigos🐮💋xox

Butter was a concept I’ve had for quite a few years now, sitting on the back burner, beckoning me with its creamy delicious vibe 🧈

When I was a little kid, one of my favorite snacks was butter. I’d stash sticks in the freezer, sprinkle them with salt, and go to TOWN. For a long time now, I wanted to turn that experience into skin care.

I wish you guys knew about all the ideas and creations and formulations I’m regularly tinkering around with behind the scenes, and how many of them will likely never see the light of day, not because they’re bad ideas, but because I just don’t have the time to properly develop and launch them. Not to mention the shelf space 😝 We have over 100 different SKUs which, by any real business metric, would be a terrible idea… But somehow it works for us!

First, there’s the idea, then there’s the research, what the family of products will entail, formulation, testing, packaging design, writing copy, font choices, printing and cutting of paper mock ups and testing them on different container sizes and shapes for readability and looks…it’s a lot!

So many concepts exist in my notepads and in rough drafts and test batches of products I may love, but for some reason never get the inspiration to design packaging for.

Butter is one that’s made it out, and I always knew she would. Quite sometime is passed since its inception, and she hasn’t been cooking the whole time. She’s been pushed aside while the regular daily demands of business have taken over- but she’s never been forgotten.

Formulations have long been completed, and package design finally tweaked to my acceptable level of completion.

It’ll be a few months til she launches by the time all of our packaging comes in, and maybe it’s rude to tease you this early in the game with something you won’t be able to try for months, but I love her and wanted to share her with ya.

After all, it’s butter, baby!

And who amongst us couldn’t use a little more fatty sunshine in our day? ☀️🐮🧈

They don’t teach this part in business school.

Good thing I’m a high school dropout.

I’d never have learned this otherwise.

Vellum Street. Known for soap. Not jokes.

Stay clean, amigos. xox 🐮💋

Did you know I initially created our fat marshmallow whipped tallow skin fluff for a friend, who, pregnant with twins, asked if I could make her something safe to use as a ni**le balm while breast feeding?

I had made fragrance free products before, but they just never sold very well. I figured I’d whip up a a batch of this, gift her some and add the remaining few dozen jars to our site to slowly trickle out to our customers with the most sensitive of skin. I also figured I’d make it fun for her, unlike any of the rest of our subdued packaging, since it wasn’t something that would be sticking around very long, and instead really just a gift to a friend.

Unbeknownst to me, it would go on to quickly become, by far, our biggest selling product, literally out selling everything else that we offered combined!

The first night it was up on our site, without me telling anyone it was there, all 2 1/2 dozen jars sold out. Over the next couple of months it would sell out almost immediately when I would stock it on our website. We eventually figured out a more efficient way to make it while still retaining all of the things that were special about it (welcome to the team industrial immersion blenders 😝), and it’s been the heart, soul, and backbone of Vellum Street ever since, spawning a entire fat marshmallow spin off family of soap, shampoo, balms, and milk baths! It’s success even inspired me to completely redo our entire branding and packaging to better fit my personality instead of fitting what I *thought* a soap company packaging should look like 🐮💋🧡💛🩵

I’ll forever be thankful to Sundry Mornings and her simple request for something safe to use for the babies she was brewing!

PS if you like incredibly delicious & thoughtful beverages & spices you should definitely check her company out! All Pennsylvania grown ingredients! Her taco spice in particular is a absolute must have in our house 😋 🌮

No joke, in 2015 I officially launched an animal fat soap company based on the movie Fight Club after a few years of fu***ng around with making my own skincare.

Tyler Durden had a soap company named Paper Street Soap Company, so I named mine Vellum Street Soap Company (vellum is a type of paper made from animal skin).

I couldn’t use human fat, so I used tallow (beef & goat), lard, and duck fat - the next best things.

My original logo was a kiss, honoring the Fight Club scene where Tyler (aka Brad Pitt) kisses the Narrators (Ed Norton) hand and pours lye (sodium hydroxide) on it. Lye, a caustic salt, is essential to soap making, and is activated by water (in this case, saliva)💋

I based the scents off a combination of flavors from the local ingredient sweet treat bakery I owned at the time (R.I.P. Cookie Confidential) and leftover “waste” food scraps (bacon fat, citrus peels, previously steeped tea & coffee grounds, etc), making a 100% food grade ingredient soap that you wish your mouth got washed out with. I spent years researching, formulating, and trialing before I officially launched.

I was immediately picked up by Whole Foods Market pre Amazon acquisition, and then quickly left WFM (by choice) after the Amazon acquisition.

I worked a full time job while vending at farmers markets and craft shows on weekends. I hustled soap out of the back of my truck. I made deals in dark alleys just off Philly’s notorious South Street.

3 years of planning. 5 years of no money making building. No investors or paid advertising or contracted celebrity or influencer recommendations, built organically to a multi 6 figure a year biz. These days I’ve got help, but I still make every single product myself. If it touches you, it was touched by me(think about that one next time you’re naked in the shower 🧼).

11 years incorporated, 14+ years since inception, and everything about us is still as pure & natural as it ever was…even my Godzilla damned curse filled sailors mouth 😜

So yeah, no jokes, no foolin’, it don’t get much more real or better quality than this .

Love yas, moocho, xox 🐮💋

I spend so much time in work clothes that putting on an actual outfit feels a little like costume design.

I actually socialized this weekend for a good friend’s surprise 50th birthday celebration. At the party, a friend’s daughter told me she liked my outfit because I looked like I was from Dungeons & Dragons.

I was aiming for cool Japanese street wear auntie.

So…kinda sorta same same? Or maybe I’m just delusional…🤔

Anyway, back to getting tallow on everything today 🐮💋

I forget about what a cool wardrobe I have because I don’t really go out much anymore. Maybe I should start putting fashion shows on for you guys here, whaddya think?? xox

I’m just saying.

There’s only so much time, and every moment you choose to fight against something is a moment you’ve lost to support something.

A cause.
A friend.
A feeling.

You can add more of the energy you want to see in the world, or you can add more of the energy you don’t.

The choice, always, is yours 🐮💋🐷 xox
