Frances Beaver will be reading her book, On A Cute One, this Thursday via Instagram Live !
Come see process material of the book during gallery hours 2 - 6 pm, Saturdays and Sundays.
Synopsis:
If she has to become the monster people treat her as, she’d like to at least become a girl monster famous for being both hot and terrifying. That or it’s just what happens to trans women in her family and she’s the first to express the gene. Either way millenial trans woman Cordie has grown Gorgon style snakes for hair and she has since stopped asking why. She does wonder however if she shares some kind of cosmic sisterhood with the other Gorgon sisters, especially when something happens on a cross country train trip from Philly to LA and back that causes her to make an indellible change to herself in the bathroom of the Superliner. A decision that is both rash and a long time coming.
Cute but for adults and funny in the way serious things have to be sometimes, On a Cute One is a sand box travelogue exploring Cordie’s newly re-encoded sexuality tangled with her desire for approval from cis women and seeing the desert for the first time. Also, making sisters without being related, ghosts without dying, and the extra life cycle stages of trans folk.

Walter Wallace Jr was murdered by two Philadelphia police officers in front of his mother while she pleaded with the officers to de-escalate.
Walter was 27 years-old, a twin, a father, a son, and a person grappling with mental illness.
In the video, over the yells of “please don’t shoot, he has mental illness” we can hear over a dozen shots. Two officers unloading their guns into the body of a Black man armed only with a knife.
And while Walter was bleeding out on the pavement, a special committee on criminal justice reform in Philadelphia was meeting to TALK ABOUT establishing a Citizens Police Oversight Commission. Even IF this passes, what kind of consolation will this be to Walter’s children? His mother? All the other families who have and WILL CONTINUE to lose loved ones to a criminal justice system rooted in white supremacy and oppression?
The news reports are stating that this case raises “difficult questions that must be answered”. Why wasn’t non-lethal force used? Why didn’t the officers tase him? Why didn’t they de-escalate?
This is not a fu***ng mystery. We know the answers. We’ve known the answers. We’ve been screaming the answers in the streets.

We are thrilled with Li Sumpter’s essay about our current exhibition “Speak Out! The Historical Self”. Please take a few minutes to read the piece and check out the show online or in person.
American Stories: Re-membering History, Re-imagining Mythos. An essay by Li Sumpter If past is prologue and pattern is truth, Speak Out! The Historical Self offers somewhat of an art oracle – a creative reading of the signs of these uncertain times…
