To come down into a curtsy lunge, you have to cross one leg back, behind the other. The front foot should be flat on the ground and you should be on the toe of your back foot.

This is done the same way as forward lunges, except you have to step backward.

Once you have mastered the basic form of lunges, try to add variations to it. Add some external resistance such as dumbbells or kettlebells. Do not carry too much weight, which you are not able to manage.

Your knees should be aligned. Front knee over your toes and back knee pointing down.

-Your front foot should not be directly in line with your back foot. Try to maintain hip-width distance.

-Take a large foot forward and while bending make sure your front foot is placed flat on the ground. If you take a small step, your knee will travel forward, past your foot, which will give excessive stress and strain on your knees.

Step 1: Stand tall on the ground with your feet hip-width apart and keep both your hands on your hips.

Step 2: Now move your right leg 1 feet forward. Lower your body until both your front and back legs make an almost (for beginners) 90 degrees angle.

Step 3: Your right knee should not go beyond your toes and at the same time, your back leg should be bent without touching the floor.

Step 4: Hold this position for 2-3 seconds.

Step 5: Press into right heel to drive back up to starting position.

Step 6: Repeat the same with the left leg.
