When a speaker measures perfectly on every graph but still sounds lifeless, most companies move on and ship it anyway. Gian Piero Matarazzo, a veteran Italian audio engineer and former Audio Review lab technician, says that reaction is exactly the problem, and he's spent decades watching it play out across the industry.

In a recent interview, he made a blunt claim that most modern speaker designers are incapable of building something that actually moves a listener.

And he traces the problem to three deeply embedded habits in the industry that almost nobody talks about openly, and they span technical practice, design culture, and corporate economics.

These touch how designers are educated, what data they're told to trust above all else, and which department inside a company actually controls what ends up in the final product.

He even gave a specific label to the new generation of designers coming out of universities, and it wasn't flattering.

But his argument isn't that all modern speakers are bad. It's that the conditions for building a truly great one have quietly disappeared in most companies.

In fact, he also named one company he considers the gold standard for doing things the right way, where the engineering side and the business side were kept completely separate on purpose.
