Headaches & “I Slept Wrong”

When I hear either of these symptoms from clients, paired with some upper back pain and/or shoulder pain, we are immediately looking at neck massage.

Neck massage benefits so much more than just the neck. We are looking at posture, the shoulder girdle, and even some major muscles that are responsible for spanning a large length of the back (hello trapezius!). Let’s take a look at just one of these muscles today.

Our trapezius (aka, the traps) begin at the base of our skull and stretch down to our T12 vertebrae. This muscle is actually largely involved in the movements of our shoulder girdle. This functionality causes it to be considered more as a muscle of the upper limb rather than one of the back.

When someone says they have shoulder pain and think it’s because they slept wrong, here’s some things to expect in my massage approach:
We are going to do some traction of the neck, some passive range of motion testing with the neck and at the shoulder joints; we are going to do some PNF muscle testing and resistance, we are going to do a blend of relaxing therapeutic massage and sports style massage and get to the bottom of what is causing your discomfort.
