Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin...How can you tell the difference?

The first thing you need to understand is that dry and dehydrated skin are not the same. Dry skin is a skin type; dehydration is a skin condition. What exactly does that mean? Dry skin is characterized by your face and body having fewer oil producing glands, resulting in a lower overall production of sebum, or face oil. On the other hand, dehydrated skin is not a permanent low level of oil, but a temporary lack of water. Dehydration can be caused by a range of different reasons. Commonly, a change in weather, sun exposure, diet and caffeine consumption are all reasons that can lead to water loss from your skin.

How to tell dry from dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin:

There are ways to self-diagnose whether your skin is dehydrated. The simplest one is to pinch your cheek. Normal skin will hold its shape, whereas dehydrated skin will wrinkle even if you’re only pinching lightly, since your skin cells are deprived of water. In fact, it can be even simpler than that. You’ll know what dehydrated skin looks like in the mirror – you’ll notice wrinkles in places you didn’t notice before, the wrinkles will be deeper and you may even develop dark circles under your eyes. Dehydrated skin is unhealthy skin, and that’s why it’ll often be inflamed, resulting in redness.

Dry skin:

Dry skin, which lacks the natural oils secreted naturally by your sebaceous glands, is often irritated, resulting in flaky, scaly and itchy patches.

How to treat dry and dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin:

Remember that dehydrated skin is just skin that’s missing a bit of moisture. Fortunately the fixes for this temporary condition are pretty straightforward and easy to do. The main theme here is to add more water to your skin and you can start by drinking the recommended daily average 8 glasses of water, though if you lead by an active lifestyle you’ll need to drink more water. There’s also a lot of water content in fruits like watermelon and orange, so fruit intake can also be another valuable source of moisture for your skin. You may also want to control your environment a bit more and consider using a humidifier in your room to counteract the effects of dry season. There are changes you can introduce to your skincare routine as well. Firstly, you’ll want to lightly exfoliate to remove dead skin. Don’t do it excessively; two to three times a week is more than enough. Afterwards you’ll need to rehydrate. If you don’t already have a serum, consider adding one to your routine. Look for serums that contain hyaluronic acid, a powerful humectant that draws water to the surface of your skin, or squalene, a fat found naturally in the skin that reinforces the skin’s moisture barrier to aid with water retention. You can also use a mask on a weekly basis for deep moisturization. Power up your moisturizer by finding a heavier one, especially for night time use, to ensure that your skin remains hydrated while you sleep. Be sure to choose a moisturizer that is noncomedogenic and isn’t formulated with a heavy oil. For a quick fix, you can also use a facial mist throughout the day.

Dry skin:

Dry skin doesn’t have any quick fixes, because it’s a skin type that accompanies you through life, meaning you’ll need to continually look after your skin to make up for the insufficient production of natural oils within your body. In general dry skin types have to be mindful of things you put onto your skin that may draw moisture. You will not want drying, sensitizing things like alcohol on your skin. When choosing skincare products, pay special care to find products which are suited for dry skin. Moisturize often, and especially after a shower or washing your hands, since these activities can wash away a layer of the natural oil secreted by your body.

Let’s have a honest talk about skin and skincare.

When you look at me you see “good skin” that’s pretty much clear, some fine lines, slight redness and little sun spots. This edited photo shows you my underside. Here you can see the areas of my skin that have been affected by a superficial first degree sunburn I got back in my late teens/early twenties doing yard work (don’t let the name fool you it wasn’t as “superficial” as the name makes you think), exposure to harsh winters, smog and pollution.

Our skin has a memory and remembers not only how we treat it but also what’s happened to it. Skincare for me isn’t just about combating the aging process but mostly about giving my skin what it needs to stay healthy and to undo/hold off these effects right here.

We’re in a time were social media makes everyone look flawless and so many feel that pressure but honestly we should striving for just having the healthiest skin we can.

Let’s talk about orange blush...I know I know this idea can sound a little scary because well it’s orange blush but trust me you can pull this off. The key is finding the right shade for your skin tone to add warmth and depth. If it looks too intense for you, you can use a beauty blender with your excess foundation or a brush with some translucent powder and dab it on to tone it down.
