This technique resembles a loaded shoulder-depression stretch, where a weight held at the side gently pulls the shoulder downward.
The movement may affect:
Upper trapezius muscles
Levator scapulae muscles
Shoulder girdle tissues
Neck-support muscles
Postural structures
Many people develop neck tension because of:
Computer work
Smartphone use
Stress
Poor posture
Prolonged sitting
Many people notice:
A stretching sensation through the side of the neck
Improved posture awareness
Temporary reduction in muscle tightness
Increased awareness of shoulder position
However, it is important to understand that holding a heavy cast-iron skillet does not instantly unpinch nerves or stop cervical neck tension.
Neck discomfort can result from many factors, including:
Muscle fatigue
Joint stiffness
Stress
Postural habits
Nerve irritation
Sleep position
The primary benefits of a gentle loaded stretch come from:
Lengthening tight muscles
Improving posture awareness
Reducing muscular tension
Encouraging movement
Using excessive weight can actually increase strain on:
The shoulder
The neck
The elbow
The wrist
The movement should feel gentle.
You should avoid:
Heavy weights
Sharp neck pain
Numbness or tingling
Pulling the shoulder forcefully downward
Holding the position for prolonged periods if symptoms worsen
If you want to stretch the upper trapezius region, a light object—or even no weight at all—is often sufficient.
For long-term neck comfort, exercises that are generally more beneficial include:
Chin tucks
Upper-back strengthening
Shoulder-blade exercises
Thoracic mobility drills
Regular posture changes
In essence, holding a weight at your side may create a mild stretch through the shoulder and neck muscles. While it does not unpinch nerves or instantly eliminate cervical tension, it can contribute to temporary muscle relaxation and improved posture awareness when performed gently and safely.

Lately, I’ve been trying to fine tune my diet to match my overall wellness regime and I have been eating a lot of sourdough bread. I guess I’m late to the sourdough party 🤷♀️
Did you know, Sourdough bread offers several potential benefits compared with many conventionally leavened breads:
1. Easier to Digest
The natural fermentation process breaks down some starches and proteins before you eat the bread. Many people find sourdough gentler on their digestive system than standard bread.
2. Lower Impact on Blood Sugar
Sourdough often has a lower glycemic response than regular white bread, meaning it may cause a slower rise in blood sugar levels.
3. Better Nutrient Availability
The fermentation reduces compounds called phytates, which can interfere with the absorption of minerals such as iron, zinc, and magnesium. This may make those nutrients more available to your body.
4. Supports Gut Health
While the baking process kills the live bacteria, the fermentation creates beneficial compounds and prebiotic fibers that may help support a healthy gut microbiome.
5. Fewer Additives
Traditional sourdough is often made with just flour, water, and salt, making it a simple, minimally processed bread option.
6. Rich Flavor and Longer Freshness
The fermentation produces the characteristic tangy flavor and can help the bread stay fresh longer without preservatives.
I work with someone who bakes fresh sourdough bread, amongst many other nutrient dense foods. If you’re interested , send me a message! I’m trying to gather orders weekly for those interested 😊
