Portland's renowned Champions Barbershop sets the bar high for the barber trade, and is now position We established Champions Barbering Institute, Inc.
(CBI) because we are passionate about preserving the Professional Barber. Barbering dates back to ancient times and has always been held in high regard and we aim to maintain that same respect by upholding the standards that this great Profession was built on! We are honored and excited to be a part of developing the Next Generation of Professional Barbering Leaders!

Last week was an eventful and meaningful week.
We had the opportunity to welcome a group of young boys from King Elementary School through their mentor program, The Chop It Up Shop, and I have to say, I was truly impressed. They shared about what they’ve been learning, their growing interest in barbering, and how excited they are to continue developing in the craft.
I also had the chance to pour into them from my own years of experience, and what stood out to me most was not only how much they already knew, but how many of them recognized the community aspect of barbering as one of the things they value most. That was powerful to hear. It is always encouraging to see young people already understanding that this craft is bigger than the haircut.
Big shout out to the mentors of The Chop It Up Shop at King Elementary for bringing them through and for the work you are doing with these young men.
Also, shout out to Benson Tech for the opportunity to speak with the Black Student Union last week as well. It was a blessing to be able to connect, share, and pour into the high school students too.
On top of that, it was another strong week at CBI. Our students are progressing well, continuing their hands-on learning, applying techniques, and making their way through the fundamentals as we prepare them to begin serving the community soon.
All around, it was an amazing week.
Week 3 is done, and we officially putting in a different type of work.
We’ve moved into tools, implements, and new hands-on skills, and the lesson is bigger than just using what’s in your hand. It’s about developing patience, precision, and understanding that fundamentals are the building blocks of everything that comes next.
They are also learning that hair must be approached with awareness. Just like fabric, every texture and wave pattern requires the right understanding and the right touch.
The Standard is locked in, focused, and learning to trust the process.

Week 2 is a wrap.
Another strong week of growth, focus, and hands-on development is in the books. The foundation is continuing to be built, and the students are rising to The Standard.
Looking forward to Week 3 and ready to keep building.
Week 2 is getting real.
The 2026 Cohort is putting hands to action with proper draping, cape and neck strip application, and learning how to properly identify hair and scalp conditions.
Professional Barber Education and Guidance is making sure they understand the full scope of responsibility that comes with becoming a professional barber. It requires awareness, safety, discipline, and standards.
They’re getting a real understanding of what they’ve become a part of, and they are more than ready for the challenge.

Our alumni is a class act, wise beyond his years and is a testament to what having a high Standard for yourself produces! At CBI, the standard is not about competing with everybody else. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself through effort, accountability, consistency, and discipline.
A lot of people come in with some knowledge. But knowledge alone is not enough. Growth happens when you step into an environment that challenges you to raise your level, stay sharp, and hold yourself to more.
