Let’s talk about spray tan fading.

Many different factors affect how a spray tan wears on the skin. First and foremost: the skin itself.

A spray tan develops within the outermost layer of the skin. As that layer naturally sheds, the tan sheds right along with it. This means things like proper prep, hydration, and daily habits play a massive role in how a tan fades.

Here are some of the biggest factors that affect fading:

• Improper prep: not exfoliating properly, not moisturizing days leading up to the tan itself

•Dry or dehydrated skin: when the skin is dry, it sheds faster and more unevenly.

•Not using tan safe products

• Climate & environment: cold or dry weather will typically leave the skin dryer

•Hot showers & long baths: prolonged heat softens the skin and speeds up exfoliation as well as dries the skin out.

• Going much darker than your natural skin tone: when a tan is significantly deeper than the natural complexion, the fading can appear more dramatic simply because of the contrast.

While our solutions are formulated with deeply hydrating ingredients to support gradual even fades, it’s important to understand that ingredients can only go so far— and that applies to every solution on the market.

At the end of the day, the condition of the skin is the ultimate deciding factor.

This is why I'm constantly educating clients on prep and aftercare. Proper prep, hydration, and maintenance will always be the key to a beautiful fade.

Showering right before your spray tan can change your skin’s pH due to water type, temperature, and the products used. Those changes can directly affect how your tan develops possibly leading to an uneven, patchy tan.

On top of that, hot water, shaving, and exfoliating right before your appointment can leave pores open. When spray solution settles into those open pores, it can result in strawberry legs 🍓

✨ Best Practices for Pre-Tan Prep ✨
• Shave and exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment
• Forgot to shave? Skip it!
• Use an exfoliating mitt, not a scrub
• Give extra love to dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles
• If you HAVE to shower due to sweat, make it a quick - cold shower with no soap!
