The human desire for control, according to philosopher Oliver Burkeman, stems from the helplessness of childhood — but it often grows into anxiety and discontent in adulthood.

As we gain more responsibility, we’re tempted to micromanage our lives in an attempt to feel secure. Yet the irony is that the more we seek to control everything, the more we feel the weight of our limitations. Instead of freeing us, control becomes a burden, feeding stress and existential dread.

Burkeman argues that maturity isn’t about achieving total control — it’s about accepting limits and finding peace within them.

He offers a compelling image: the “dancing monk.” Unlike a child who dances without shame or an adult who worries about appearances, the monk moves freely, knowing he cannot control others’ judgments.
