BOTOX cosmetic, as it’s known today, was “accidentally” discovered by Dr. Jean Carruthers, an ophthalmologist based in Vancouver in 1987. Dr. Carruthers was injecting a diluted solution of botulinum toxin into patients with blepharospasm, a medical condition wherein the muscles of the eye spasm and blink uncontrollably. One of her patients had her forehead injected and noticed her wrinkles went away! Dr. Carruthers shared her findings with her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, a dermatologist and the husband and wife team presented their clinical findings at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery in Orlando, FL in 1992. Their peers called the idea crazy and told them it was going nowhere. Undeterred, Drs. Carruthers continued injecting Botox, and pioneered the technique for treating facial wrinkles used worldwide.
