For two and a half years, Matt Shaha carried a gift for his mother everywhere he went.

His mother, Melanie, had undergone surgeries for a recurrent benign pituitary tumor in 2003 and 2006. When the tumor returned in 2017, radiation treatment caused permanent hair loss. She said she did not mind being ill as much as she disliked looking visibly ill everywhere she went.

Among Melanie’s six children, Matt’s strawberry-blond hair was the closest to hers in color and texture. What began as a family conversation became a commitment: he would keep growing it until there was enough to create a wig specifically for her.

After approximately two and a half years, Matt cut off one foot of hair. The family sent it to a California specialist, who hand-stitched it into a lighter, more comfortable custom wig. Matt also covered the approximately $2,000 cost.

When asked why he did it, his explanation was simple: “She gave me the hair in the first place.”

For Melanie, the gift was about more than appearance. It gave her the freedom to enter a store or public place without immediately feeling defined by illness. She said seeing herself with hair again helped her feel beautiful and more like herself.

Sometimes love is not one dramatic moment. Sometimes it grows slowly-half an inch at a time.
