Every stylist’s Instagram and website is a curated AF portfolio.

The perfect lighting. The cleanest install. The “after” that looks flawless.

But you’re not seeing the moments where they had to pivot and problem solve…and build trust in a different way.

I had a regular client who recently came in for her usual maintenance color.

She let me know she wanted to feel “less red, more violet.” And instead of slowing down and having her show me exactly what that meant to her…I trusted my interpretation.

And I missed.

A couple days later she messaged me saying it felt too dark.

So I got her in right away, thinking it would be a quick adjustment…well, that turned into a 9 hour color correction.

We left at 1am.

And it still wasn’t done.

I brought her back in a few days later, refined everything, and that’s when we got it right.

She texted me after saying she loved it—and that she was getting compliments nonstop.

But here’s the part that matters:

That result didn’t come from getting it perfect the first time.
It came from being willing to take ownership, adjust, and stay in it until it was right.

That’s the part you don’t see on most feeds.

And I think you should.

Because anyone can post a perfect “after.”

Not everyone will show you what it took to get there.

If you’re a client, this is your reminder that communication matters more than perfection—and you deserve a stylist who will listen, adjust, and stand behind their work.

And if you’re a stylist, this is your reminder that the messy middle isn’t failure.

It’s where you become someone your clients can actually trust💕

This industry moves fast, and if you’re not looking at your own work with a critical eye, you’re not growing (really is that simple!!)

Because when all is said and done, this isn’t just about how the bonds *look*…it’s about how they feel, how they wear, and how they impact your client’s natural hair health over time.

When you’re looking at bonds, pay attention to things like:
– size (1:1 natural hair to bond ratio)
– placement (not too close to the scalp, not twisted, hair above the bond stays in its natural alignment)
– movement (your hair should still move and feel like YOUR hair)
– and overall comfort (no tension, no sores, no irritation)

You deserve to feel confident in the work you’re putting in your clients’ hair…and as a client, you deserve work that’s actually safe, intentional, and done with your lifestyle in mind!
