THIRTY YEARS AGO TODAY - May 16, 1996

In highschool I told my mother I wanted to go to hair school, and of course she gave me solid motherly advice - "Why don't you get a bachelor's degree first?" So I enrolled at SUNY Potsdam... and then promptly dropped out! I enrolled at Philips Hairstyling Institute before saying a word to my mother!

Needless to say she was not impressed. But 30 years later I think it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I've loved every minute of it.

If my mother were alive today she would still argue I should have finished the degree. 😅

Michael Avery & Co hair studio is an unpretentious hair studio with a genuine focus on the client. Our career is built on our love for the craft, but more so deepened by the connections we make with people. It's these connections that have sustained us both personally and financially.

Even the layout of our salon is designed to foster connection. We've avoided a row of mirrors down the wall like an assembly line. Instead, we've created a space that invites intimacy between each stylist and their client, while also staying connected to the fun social buzz of the salon.
