May is Mental Health Awareness Month 🌱

If we aren’t stressed, we know someone who is. From anxiety to depression, our mental heath + nervous system both have a significant impact on the health of our skin and can have negative effects.

Stress can trigger our body’s primary stress hormone, cortisol to elevate, leading to inflammation, which can aggravate + flare-up existing skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.

Stress hormones can also slow down wound healing as well as break down collagen + elastin, which can cause fine lines + wrinkles.

Cortisol also can cause increased oil production in your glands, which can clog your pores + lead to breakouts.

On the flip side, cortisol can also slow the production of beneficial oils that we need in order to protect our skin barrier. This can result in dehydrated, rough, dull, and sometimes flakey skin.

It’s important that we remember to take time for ourselves to practice a little self care for not only our minds + wellbeing, but also the health of skin. 🧖🏼‍♀️
