As I was organizing my office this weekend, I came across the binder I used for book keeping my first year of doing hair. It was full of crumpled receipts paper clipped to each month, handwritten monthly income/expenses, and a printed out article from Google titled “Tax Tips for Booth Renters.” I decided just for funsies to see what I made in the month of February 2016. After I added up my income and subtracted salon rent and product, it came out to a whopping $294.19. 😳I was BARELY breaking even let alone making a livable wage.
If you’re a new stylist please know that is not how it should be! I had absolutely no idea what the hell I was doing, how to price my services, how to keep my books or how to run a business. But I share this to say that even lost, confused, and scared, I made it work. And you can too! I learned along the way from my own mistakes and from the guidance of other amazing stylists that I’ve crossed paths with over the years.
There is nothing in this world that is too good for you and just the willingness to try is half the battle. I was emotional reading through some of the names in my books from then, and the fact that most of them still appear in my chair regularly today. I’ll be forever grateful to my clients for letting me learn and grow with them. Building this business is something that is so special to me, and I’m so thankful for every season of it.🤍

This reminder is for me and anyone else who struggles with this. I love to work hard, I love being independent, and I love seeing my hard work pay off before my eyes.
That being said, the “hustle” culture of working past the point of burnout and wearing exhaustion as a badge of honor is incredibly toxic and something I’m continually trying to unlearn.
Recently I’ve been working my butt off behind the chair and in my personal life and I have been feeling it both physically and mentally. This weekend I will be taking some time off to refill my cup for the first time in a long time. I’ll be getting back to any work related messages on Tuesday, but follow along on my weekend out of the salon via my stories if you please. ✨ (I’ll be seeing some very special people 🥲 ✈️)

As we round the corner to one full year since the very first shutdown, I have been reflecting on all that has happened, and all that has changed since.
When I found out salons had to shutdown, I was like “wait can they do that?!” I didn’t know what would happen to my business, and I was gutted by the thought of all that I’d work so hard to build crumbling for reasons I couldn’t control.
So many tears were shed during that time. So much sleep was lost, but through it all, my clients showed up for me. The women that I so passionately support while they’re in my chair and beyond began to support me. They championed me and reassured me that they would be with me on the other side of it all.
Working with strong, beautiful, resilient women everyday is a part of my job that I hold so close to my heart. I beam with pride when my clients succeed and my heart aches when they struggle. The reciprocity I felt in 2020 of that same love and support is something I will never forget. So today I’m grateful. For you, for this, for all of it. 🤍

I’ve never been a big “new years resolution” girl, as I don’t think you need a new year to create a new habit or set a new goal, BUT last year I decided to hop on board with a trend I first saw via my cute friend . The idea is to choose a word of intention to carry with you into the new year. A simple, succinct way of keeping yourself focused on those intentions when the chaos of life gets a little too loud.
My word for 2020 was BRAVE. I didn’t know at the time how truly fitting this word would come to be for all that unfolded. So many days of this year felt like a storm, and while I’m proud that I was brave in weathering that, I realized that braving looks much different from the outside than it feels when you’re going through it. This year brought so much uncertainty and with that, a tremendous amount of anxiety. Living in the present moment became unimaginably hard and I was in a constant state of worry about what was coming next, and how I could control, prepare and fix it. I’m a perfectionist to my core and am forever working to unlearn those tendencies.
While I know that 2021 will not come without its challenges, I am entering this year with the word GROUNDED. No matter what storms pour over into the new year, I will let this moment be what it is, be present and honor it. I will let go of what I cannot control and continue to act in integrity for the things I can. I don’t want this year to just be “survived” but truly lived and enjoyed, because joy doesn’t have to stop just because it’s raining out.
If you picked a word of intention for this year and are comfortable sharing, I’d love to hear it! I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday. I’m feeling so hopeful for what lies ahead! 🤍

Of all the things I’ll be leaving in 2020, this one is definitely the most exciting! Saying bye bye to Hairbymeganevang and hello to ! This page will continue to showcase beautiful hair, but also moments spent with my clients and noteworthy moments in my own life. Along with this new name will come a new website (link in bio) as well as adjusted pricing starting January 1st, also listed on my website under “services.”
This year it became clear that it was time to choose a new name that would better reflect the brand that I have created over the last several years. As I reflected on what I love most about this profession, I realized that, while my passion for artistry is undeniable, I cherish the MOMENTS I share with my clients more than anything. I am so proud to say that I have truly been able to cultivate lasting friendships with my clients that go far beyond a comb and a brush.
You may think you’re just booking an appointment to get prepped for a first date, a job interview, your baby shower or even your wedding day, but from where I stand, I get to help you feel your best before you fall in love, land your dream job, start a family or marry your soulmate.
My clients have helped me become the woman I am today, and while it may seem insignificant, the moments I spend with each of you mean even more to me than the manes you allow me to paint! I look forward to creating more beautiful manes while gathering significant moments along the way! So now we’re going full speed ahead with in the driver’s seat, but you can just call me Meg 💕 ps: if you have any questions regarding pricing or appointments please feel free to reach out via the contact tab on my website!

The inevitability of a third closure has been looming for some time now. I’ve made a concerted effort to not worry and speculate about it but instead just enjoy the time I had with my clients.
I know everyone has an opinion on how this is being handled. I work in an industry where I see people of all ages, backgrounds, political views and values. Many of them are people that I have grown to truly love and respect, and I can respect that our unique experiences have shaped our views on the world. So even when I disagree, I do my best to lead with empathy and kindness, as I truly believe that is the only way we will ever be able to find our way back to each other again. In frustration, reaching for negative and dehumanizing rhetoric toward those who don’t see the world the way we do won’t get us anywhere.
That being said, it is now time to shut my doors for the third time this year. It saddens me that I won’t be able to enjoy the holiday season with my clients, as it is a time that holds such a special place in my heart. To my clients, your kindness and love has truly carried my spirit through this year and now more than ever, your loyalty continues to make these sacrifices feel less heavy. I am handling this with as much grace as I know how, and supporting my clients as best I can through it. If you have an appointment booked, you’ll be hearing from me soon. I’ll be taking this on a week by week basis and going from there. Thank you in advance for your patience! If you’d like to support my business through this holiday season and beyond, I will still be selling Kevin Murphy retail products for porch drop offs. If you have any questions please feel free to text me! I cannot wait to see you gals in my chair in 2021! 🖤

The mask says it all. As we head into a week that is sure to be heavy both politically and socially, here’s a reminder to just be kind to each other. Even when you disagree, even when it doesn’t come easy, just be kind💛

I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a 7.5 hour color correction as much as this one. 🖤
This girl is so smart, hilarious and understanding of the process. She had been retouching her red at home every few weeks for YEARS but as law school came to a close for her, it was time to switch up her hair as she forges her path as a boss @$$ lawyer!
I’m so thankful for the trust she put in me for such a big change, and so happy with what we were able to achieve in one session!

I don’t always do vivids, but when I do it’s for this sweet little gal. 🖤
You might not be able to tell from the photo but this is FIVE different shades of magenta’s/pinks/purples. Vivids are never something I’ll specialize in but I’m thankful to have a few bold clients that let me play 🤗💕💜

Finally, a brunette 😂🤩
I’m so ready for the weather to catch up to all these fall transformations! 🥵

NEW & EXISTING CLIENTS! 📣
I have been having a TON of new clients reaching out recently (so exciting and I can’t wait to meet you gals!) BUT just wanted to remind any new clients to check out the “booking” tab in my highlights to see how to go about booking your appointment.
I ask for clients to text instead of DM because a lot of them go to my requests and I don’t go through them/see them as often!
All of that being said, existing clients please PRE-BOOK your next appointment so I am able to gauge how many new gals I can take on! My current clients will always take priority but I can only guarantee you’ll get your preferred slot if you prebook 🤍
Thanks in advance! This makes booking go so much smoother on both ends🤗 also thank you for your patience on hearing back! I’m just one gal and am working long days behind the chair, so I SO appreciate your understanding! 🖤

Looking back at my mindset in my teens and early 20s, I see so many things that I owe my body an apology for. Depriving her, wearing a waist trainer to contort her (LOL not proud of that one), and wishing away parts of her all together. It has taken YEARS of personal work and growth but today instead of apologizing, I’d like to say thank you.
To my legs that I once wished were thinner, smoother and longer, thank you for carrying me places and allowing me to travel the world.
To my skin that I once wished to be tanner and freckle free, thank you for protecting my body, for healing my wounds & leaving scars in their place.
To my eyes that I once wished to be blue or green, thank you for helping me see the world, vividly, in full color.
To my hips and curves that I feared made me less than because I wasn’t a size 2, thank you for teaching me that beauty is not a “one size fits all.” No one should be denied the chance to feel beautiful exactly the way they are. And even if you have to remind yourself every minute of every day, YOU are worthy of loving and appreciating yourself regardless of your physical form. What can you thank your body for today? 🖤XO, Meg.
